audiovox cruise control drops out
« on: February 26, 2012, 12:48:21 am »
My cruise control won't stay on.  when i press the on switch the green light on the switch module comes on, but then after a short while, it goes out.  this has been an ongoing problem and has gotten worse over time until the cruise is unusable.  Anyone have some ides where to start???  thanks,   Bill

Probably a loose connection somewhere.  I'd start by checking all of them.  At the very least, pull apart any plugs, inspect, and re-attach.  Then move on to anything that is crimped or spliced.  Those connections can sometimes get some water in them and corrode.

Perhaps a vacuum leak caused by a loose or cracked little hose?

I had the same issue with my cruise control last summer. I went through all of the electrical connections and vacuum hoses with no resolution, but a new CCS-100 touchpad control from Murphs' ($38.00) fixed the issue.

Any additional LED taillights like a BackOff light bar? I ask because I had a similar problem with intermittent operation of the cruise that I traced to some shorted LED's in my light bar. Snipped the wires and the cruise worked fine (it was actually causing other electrical problems as well - charging voltage drop, ignition cut out - not good, especially on the roads in the Yukon Territory and Alaska)

Also, my buddy Rocky recently had cruise control problems - intermittent operation, gradually getting worse until complete failure. Running through all the voltage and vacuum checks lead to a failure of the electronics in the servo itself.

Good luck, it can be a real headache to diagnose.

I remember reading that the touchpad could be a problem, but didn't know what the symptoms of a bad touchpad were.  guess I should have asked that question first.  thanks,  Bill

Do you have the manual, Bill? To test the pad for operation, you need to push the buttons while the power is on and watch for the LED on the servo circuit to flash. It's laid out in the manual. Let us know if you need the directions.

Can you replicate the problem in the garage?

I have the manual that came with it and saw that there is a trouble shooting section, but I haven't really studied it yet.  The "on" light (on the keypad) seems to stay on if the bike is not running, but this is an erratic situation, so?????????  I couldn't be sure that is always the case.  Bill

The light should not come on with the ignition off. Most likely a fault in the control pad. Something simple you could do is pull the keypad off the bike and pop the backoff. Then using a clean, brand new pencil eraser, lightly brush the contacts on the circuit board (do not rub, just an easy brush). You just want to clean off any residue that my be there.

Then put it back on and test it.

I found A problem, whether it is THE problem or not, only time will tell.  I looked at the keypad and it looked o.k., I see that it is just a momentary contact device, and if that little black button doesn't make a connecting, then it won't work.  so cleaning that would be a good idea, but making a connection wasn't the problme, keeping the connection was.   Then I started wiggling wires and LO, the light went out.  It looks like the connector, connecting the keypad to the rest of the  harness, was possibly not pushed all the way together.  And when I took the connector apart, it looked like the red pin was not pushed all the way in.  I put it all back together and now I cannot get the light to go out by fiddling with wires or the connector,  so maybe that was the problem.  be nice if it was something so simple.  Bill

Moose, I have moved your post to a new thread in the C-14 section, as the C-14 has little in common with with the C-10, other than our great club, the Concours Owners Group, and the people in it.

The new topic is here: Installing audiovox cruise control
