Well, I guess all I need now (from the Concours gurus who know) is the assurance that a backrest assy from an 06 will fit my 86 with no problems.  Once I have the assurance, I then just need to make a decision to buy it or not.

It fits mine.
The only difference is the upholstery.

The assembly will fit just fine.  It just clamps onto the grab rails, and those rails were the same from 1986 to 2006.

Well I figured as much, but you know these guys at the dealerships, if their computer says something they wont take OUR word for anything else.  A large reason I looked at Connie is because of her interchangability with things.  Thanks guys.  I am also looking into these givi topcases that were mentioned on this thread, to also use as a backrest with pad.

Update:  For anyone looking into a nice solution to this problem, I just installed my new GIVI E45 topcase with the optional E68 backrest pad.  My backrest issue is solved and I got a nice topcase to boot.  Total cost of topcase, bike specific mounting, and backrest......around $300 with shipping.

I have an '04 Concours using a '86 seat (clicked right on) and a late model factory backrest.  All fits fine and I never thought about the vinyl texture difference between the seat and rest until now - it meant that little to me.
'04 Concours - "Big Bastard" w/Tipover Bars, Exh Sprocket, 2mm carb, block-off plates, Handlebar conversion, '86 seat, EGA ports on ceramic-coated exh system, fuel gauge fix, fenda extenda, spin on oil filter, manual petcock, big Throttlemeisters, screw kit, fairing extenders, and Kneesavers - Suits Me Fine

Plus I would think it would be pretty cheap to recover the backrest to match .
