HID Color (temp) suggestions?
« on: April 26, 2010, 09:24:00 am »
I've never used a HID light... so much like picking a windshield height when you don't have one... I'm clueless about what temp to get for my bulb. Any suggestions or comments?    4300k  5000k  6000k  8000k  10000k  12000k

Rory,    HID's are generally in the 6000-6500K range. When it gets to the 8K range, the light will have a blue or purple color. Sunlight is 6500K. Light produced in at this color temperature will be very white which aids night vision.    Bulb manufacturers can simulate HID "whiteness" in conventional halogen bulbs by lightly coating the bulb with blue die. It's close to HID in color at substantially less cost.    Hope this helps.

Thanks.. I'm ordering a 4300k kit. It is for a car, so I'll have a spare bulb and ballast for $70.00    http://www.vvme.com/12v-5055w-h439003-bixenon-hid-kit-p-31:0f777811a0e7ac8d72f9ddd531942572.html

http://www.vvme.com/page.html?chapter=1&id=34    They had a better chart a while back which showed not only color but output for the different temps. The 4300K is the brightest output measured in lumems. 4300 and 5000 are the most white in appearance. 5000 appears to have a slight hint of blue from these pics. In the older pics which showed shots on the pavement at night, the 5000 was still pretty white looking. 6000 and up gets into the blueish look and lumens is reduced as you go up.   2003 Concours, 58K  COG #6953  IBA 28004  http://home.comcast.net/~slybones/Concours/connieMain.htm
