Largest GIVI storage behind passenger on C10?
« on: September 10, 2011, 04:30:02 pm »
^-^  I've decided to buy the largest GIVI storage box to put on my 2002 C10.  I like the large rear brake light on the box and of course the added storage area.  I have read that there will be a lot of turbulence if I do this.  Can someone that has has experience with this storage box on a C10 please tell me what to expect if I do this?  I hope it will not be unsafe to do this.  Thanks for your help my friends.

Ride safe,
Bud

Certainly not the "largest" box but I've had a E460 with top rack and passenger pad on my bike for eight years now and no real issues with handling, turbulence etc, well other than having to fit all my wife's crap in it.  I know of many with the E52 and all is equally good. I hera they are making a 55liter box now as well.  so..........

You guys and your teeny weeny little trunks.  I have the Shad 50. I just ran the bike at 137mph  with no buffeting  for hours and hours. Gas mileage sure sucked.
You must be buying the Givi 55.  That is a beast  and a little pricey too.
Mine is the last  Shad  pictured near the bottom.

I have the E460 with the external top luggage rack, and I've strapped lotsa things to that, and I swap the box from the Connie to the WeeStrom and I can't even tell when it is there or not, on either bike.  I've had zero issues with turbulence due to the trunk box.  I have a Rifle windshield, which may or may not have a part in the equation, although my personal belief is that the rider's body should block most of the airflow to the trunk box.  I think the bigger issue would be the amount of weight you put in it, up high and aft of the rear axle, which is never good.  Perhaps 2linby and some others who do Iron Butt rides with extra fuel tanks back there may be able to better comment on that.

I had a E52 on my 03 as well, with no issues. I use a E55 now on my FJR. A very nice case that you can save money on options by buying the deluxe case.

Many thanks to all of you for your replies.  I thought the E52 GIVI was the largest they made but learned they made a bigger one.  Mine is the E52 so it should work fine from what many of you have said.  No need to worry about that now.  Thanks again.

Ride safe,

Bud

Givi E52 with brake lights as well, never noticed any problems.  Get the optional back pad as well for your SO.

Givi does offer a 55 liter now, so I'd suggest it with the brake light.  My thought on trunks and tail bags, you will always want a bigger one.    :)

I have the E52. Great case but the light are a bugger to keep working. The contact stick up and usually don't make contact.

I have a Givi E 55 Tech on my 06. I have not noticed any turbulence, but I have only had it on the bike for a couple of days now. I will be running up through North Carolina and Virginia in the next week, so I will let you know how it handles with a full load on the open road and in the twisties. I picked the Tech because I thought the all black would look better than the silver stripes. My Concours will soon just be a big bruise...all black and blue.

Can anyone tell me if the mounting baseplate is the same for all the GIVI Monokey boxes? I presently have an old E45 topcase on Zeke but would like to look at one of the larger options..........

One problem with a BIG tail trunk is the tendency to put lots of stuff in it.  That puts a heckuva lot of weight up high and behind the center of gravity. This TRULY adversely effects the handling/braking of the motorcycle.  The tail trunk should be for light (albeit bulky) items such as fleece jackets, rain gear, etc.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the GIVI E55 Maxia 3 and the E55 Tech?

Only thing I can see is the Tech appears to use smoked lenses as opposed to the red on the Maxia 3......

The E55 Tech is all black with smoke lenses. The maxia has silver accents and red lenses. I'll post a pick of my 06 with the Tech if it is not raining later.

Ranger Jim is right. The extra size does pose restraint issues. I pack large light items in any topcase to keep the weight transfer to a minimum. The front end gets a 'little light' due to the levering with that weight 'out back' if you overload the case.

John, the E128 baseplate for the Concours fits 'any' Givi Monokey case. I swap between E360 and E55 depending on the needs of the venture.

thanks handyman....I was curious because it looks like there is a pretty significant price difference. I would have thought there would have more than just these differences....

Do you know if the stoplight kit (E112, common to both) replaces the lenses too?

John,

There are two versions of each of the E55's, the "basic" model and the "luxury".  The prices for the basic Tech and basic Maxia are the same, as are the prices for the luxury versions.  Were you comparing the price between the luxury Tech and the basic standard Maxia?

hi Gary, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I hadn't seen any mention of any "luxury" version. I was looking here:

http://www.giviusa.com/cases/monokey/E55-TECH                 and
http://www.giviusa.com/cases/monokey/E55-MAXIA-3

Any idea what the "luxury" versions give you?

John,

It looks like the luxury version includes a remote control for unlocking the case and the light kit.  I found some further descriptions on the Twisted Throttle site:

An update on the function of the E55. I just traveled up through the southeast to include the Cherehola Skyway, Deal's Gap both ways, a couple hundred miles of the Blue Ridge, some of the Moonshiner 28, and several exciting connectors. I had the E55 loaded with about 25 to 30 pounds of gear, I know...but I am traveling for work and had to carry extra skivvies. The bike handled well with the only noticeable change being that the bike felt a little lighter in the front in the middle of the powerband in the lower gears with heavy throttle twisting. I did not notice any change in the manners of the bike, other than noted, in any of the conditions I was riding in. This included high speed highway, high speed sweepers, twisty backroads, and parking lot maneuvers. I did change from a Cortech triple bag(using only the large section) to a Cortech 18L tank bag. This change helped improve my parking lot feet up handling and decreased my feet up turning radius also. The larger and heavier loaded topcase did not increase parking lot heaviness any amount to notice. I highly recommend the E55 with a warning in reference to overloading.
