LED Bulbs Part 4
« on: March 02, 2013, 11:42:34 pm »
I sure most of you will be glad to know this is the last of this series of LED bulb topics, from me, for the near future. Who knows what the future may hold.

LED Bulbs Part 1 was 2 years ago where I tried several of the Tower model SMD LED bulbs. And the short answer is I was not overly impressed. A few months ago I started LED Bulbs Part 2 where I tried some even more expensive 3 watt high power LED bulbs. This was using 1156 Amber LED bulbs in the rear turn signals. Better but still not there yet. It was in this thread that a few showed thier results just using the old fasion, classic looking 24 LED bulbs with 18 facing out the back and 6 radially facing bulbs.

This lead me to LED Bulbs Part 2-2 where I ordered some of these classic LED bulbs with 24 LEDs, in 1156 Amber bulb for the rear turn signals and compare them all again. Overall I liked the cheap, old fashion, classic 24 LED bulbs the best. I also compared a set from Superbrigtled.com versus the ebay Chinese knockoffs.

This lead to ordering a set of 1157 Red LED bulbs for the rear tail/brake light housing and LED Bulbs Part 3 thread. In here I was also going to compare RED LED bulbs versus WHITE LED bulbs. As we are always told to use the same color LED bulb as the lens cover it has shine through. And that white wont work very well. The normal vendor I have been using has always given me good products. I have not had issues. But that vendor did not have any 1157 WHITE 24 Count Classic LED bulbs at that time. So I ordered the white ones from a different vendor ( the red ones from the same vendor ). The White ones were complete pieces of crap and fell apart just trying to install them. Never got to see them work.

Which finally leads us to today. I had orderd some 1157 Amber bulbs for the front turn signals. I also noticed at this time the normal vendor did have some white ones too. So I ordered a set or each. And like the others these seem much better and worked fine.

In conclusion I liked the 24 Classic LED bulbs the best. Work better than the tower models. Still not as good as incandescents,

I also like the WHITE ones better. So much for not working. I like the color better. They were a lighter yellow color showing through the front lens. The Amber bulbs were a darker color. To the naked eye they were close in brightness with the WHITE ones winning by a small margin. But looking at the pics, dang,  WHITE works great.

Hey Sly,
Thanks for the great documentation on all the bulbs you've tried out. Having the two bulb taillight makes it easy to see the difference. I tried once, ordering from superbrightLEDs.com, but they were not nearly as bright. I emailed them, and the told me they did not have any that matched incandescent brightness, soI gave up for the time. Times change, and LED's have gotten brighter, but from your tests, it looks like they ain't there yet!

Like the previous Parts camera on manual exposure, bike running at idle. These are all in running light mode. No flashers or TS running.

First up is the Incandescent on the right as facing the bike, and the 42 count tower SMD LED on the left. Fills the lens nicely, but not near as bright.

Next is the incandescent versus the 24 Count, classic LED in Amber color. Brighter straight on but does not fill the lens as well.

This is the incandescent versus the 24 count, classic LED in White color. Fills the lens better and color is a lighter, brighter yellow looking versus the Amber LED bulb

This is the 24 Count classic LED in the left and the 42 count SMD tower in the right, comparing the 2 LED bulb types.

For this last one I pulled the 42 count SMD tower and replaced with the 24 count classsic in white. This is the Amber color in the left side, White color in the right side. Myself I like the white LEDs better. This is what I left in there, the ones everyone tells you NOT to get.
