Luggage on 1986?
« on: August 04, 2012, 02:42:48 pm »
I was told by the PO of my newly acquired '86 that the bike doesn't have provisions for mounting luggage. From everything I've read, this isn't true - however, I can't seem to find a definitive answer.

I want to put the factory luggage on my '86 - what parts fit and what do I need? Where can I source these parts?

The circled L shaped hardware on the '86 pictured above is where your bags would attach.  Does your bike have these?

IIRC the '86 bags were a different finish and the key for the locks were unique to the '86. So they came with them, but, probably have much better success finding '87-'06 bags then you would the " '86 bags"
FYI, '87 and up bags were keyed as a set as "A" or "B" across all the years.

The piece he has circled is normally referred to as an Antler.
All Connies had luggage, and all Connie Luggage (antlers/Bags) will fit your bike.

You can get the parts here. Look for people on the forum that are parting out a Connie.
Or, go to Ebay etc.

NOTE: The bags on an 86/87 were a smoother surface than later Connies, and the keys were different.
Other than that they are all the same....          All Connie bags fade, or get scratched up with time.
Suggest you look fior bags on a more recent bike.        If you get some and don't like the condition, they can be painted.

Great info guys! I don't have the "antlers" on my bike, unfortunately. I will start looking for c10 antlers and bags in the emporium area (and maybe ebay as well).

Thanks!

Yes sir as Vic has said. My 86 has a different finish than all the other years I've seen including my own 2003 (RIP). And yes it uses a different key. Unless you want an exact match for a restoration or something. I agree on just buying a newer year set. Or if you can't find a set reasonably. You could always install a Shad or Givi set instead. Just other options in case you can't find a reasonable OEM set.

They all came from the factory with luggage, but sounds like the PO removed the antlers, and possibly the parts the antlers mounted to.
Can you post some pics?

Hers a fiche to show you whats needed, all years are the same, with the exception of the key# and finish on the bags: Brock Delp's '99 Kawasaki Concours Microfiche

You should post a WTB in the Emporium.

According to the fiche, I have the right and left of part #35011, but am missing 35011A&B and 11044 (including all hardware). Which of these are referred to as the "antlers" (I assume it's 35011A&B)?

I posted a WTB in the emporium.

If I were in your shoes, and there are no bags or antlers, I would look into the GIVI E45 for the side bags and trunk.  All 3 together would look like it were factory, those bags beat the crap out of the OE luggage, and are 150 or so each.  You have to get the appropriate bike specific mounting hardware and brackets for all of them, but after you are done you will have the ultimate setup.  The cases are E45, the bike specific mount for the trunk is the E128 I believe, and the backrest that cap optionally attach to the trunk is the E68.  I dont know anything about the mount to put the E45 case on the sides.  Look into it, and you won't regret it.  Ask if you have any questions.  This link is to the Revzilla video review of the case.  Revzilla is also the bomb, getting me my case in 2 days flat.

That's a good point, v8shadow. Ill look into the Givi bags

I've actually been lurking around for a softbag option as well. I've always enjoyed soft luggage on my previous bikes, to far greater degree than hard bags. Does anyone have any experience with this on the Connie? How about recommendations?

Just my 3 cents. But, I'd go with the Givi (or even stockers) waaay before soft bags on a Connie.

If yer always gonna have the bags on then the Givis are fine.
If yer planning on only fitting them for the occasional longer ride then the OEM bags are better.
You can unbolt the antlers (2 bolts each) and fit the blanking panels and she looks good.
With the Givis the racks are ugly without the bags fitted.

Softbags are kinda pointless on a big tourer and will damage the paintwork on the side panels under the saddle.
You may also have to remove the grab-rails to get softbags to sit right.

Finally, under that little cover behind the saddle there is a rack.
Ya need to remove the saddle and unscrew a little thumbscrew to remove the cover.
The rack itself is pathetically small but 18 years ago I cast myself an ally rack and bolted it on there (4 bolts into the rear subframe) and then fitted a 52 litre trunk to the rack. I have carried all kinds of stuff in there and it's still solid as a rock.

If you're thinking about aftermarket bags, I'll put in my vote for the Shads that Murph sells.  Equal, if not better, quality to the Givis, and Murph's mounts give more room for the passenger than the Happy Trails mounts that are made for the Givis.  Either ones are nice bags, but I really like the Shads.  When you factor in a mounting system, they end up being very close in price to the Givis.  You can see them in my signature photo.

I mighta gone with the Shad's from Murph as well, but this was during the infamous Shad drought of '08.

The trunk is the JCW $45 special w/ custom "cutting board" mount.

Great pictures! They look awfully nice. With the price of what I see used factory bags going for, aftermarket is looking more and more appealing. The bike already has a nice aftermarket trunk bolted on. I'll have to verify the make of that unit and post up a picture...

I'm having trouble finding the blanking panels for any year but I need a set for an '03. Anyone have any suggestions

Great pictures of the Givi mounts that are by now discontinued, I've been wanting to slap a pair on.... I had Givi's on my VFR and absolutly loves them.
