Lyons back rest mount
« on: September 20, 2013, 12:33:24 pm »
I have the stock Kawi backrest. Going to add a Givi topcase for use on weekend and longer trips and mount it as usual. I want to have a backrest still installed for when we reach our destination and Givi is removed. Has anyone used or seen the Lyons backrest while a topcase was loaded. I think the Lyons frame mount to the grabrails is of thinner material and might allow clearance for the topcase install. I think the Kawi luggage rack wouldn't be supportive enough and put the topcase higher if I were to use that but it's still an option. I contacted Ronnie L and he doesn't have a lead on any of the backrests that he use to make. How does the Lyons frame attach to the grabrails?

Bob,

Those Lyons rack were stout.  I have two. They had extensions that went right beside the seat.  The front of that extension had a U cut into it that slipped onto the very front of the grab rail.  Then he had a U bolt attached that clamped onto the rear of the grab rail to keep rack from slipping off.  Hard for me to give description that make sense.

Like I said I have two.  One has been modified to bolt to bike where stock rack did.  I then attached the Givi plate to that to hold the top box.  Makes a great platform.  Can't use the Lyons backrest but the box can do that for the passenger.  The other rack is unmolested and could be bought if you are interested.

I could be persuaded to send some pics if you'd like.  Actually, there is one pic of the setup in the thread of the hitch I  want to sell.  Only shows the rear however.

HTH,
Roger

Hi Roger, your description was enlightening. I saw pictures with the slot that hooked on the front of the grab rail and only saw two nuts but didn't see how that mounted.. if you could send me pics that would be great. My girlfriend is small so I made an adapter plate for the Kawi backrest that angled it more towards perpendicular to seat moved it forward by two inches and raised it above the seat but with that mounting frame thickness behind the seat I don't have enough surface to mount the Givi plate. My other thought was to cut the Kawi  mount frame behind where it starts rising above the grab rails and weld  an s shaped plate with one end mounted between the stock under cover luggage rack holes and Givi mount and the other end would s up and over the seat to accomadate the back rest. If the Lyons backrest is closer to the back of the seat and thnner material it maybe a better starting platform for fabbing up what I want to accomplish, backrest still installed when I remove givi on long trips.Let me know how much you want for the Lyons.
Thanks, Bob
