Need a new windshield...any suggestions?
« on: August 21, 2011, 07:37:35 pm »
I have just purchased an 86 connie. Love it so far. Overall the bike is in great condition other than a few small flaws which can be expected for the age. One of the flaws that i just cant deal with is the windshield. It looks like it was cleaned with brakeclean at some point. It is cloudy and distorted and has to go. I was interested in knowing if anyone out there could direct me to a shorter, more round aerodynamic look. The stock windshield looks like a square sitting out front of my bike. I prefer smoked and would like it to be at least 6-8" shorter. Any direction would be great!!

Yeah, some of the windshields do glaze over due to the wrong cleaners and sun exposure.
I have a rifle.com windhshield system.  Not cheap, but neither are many other shields.  You might have a hack or jigsaw in your future to cut it down.  :)

Murphskits.com sells them.  He is a great vendor for the Concours.  This info might help:

Not sure if Givi makes one.

I cut my own out of lexan

SAME HERE...... 1/8" Lexan available from McMaster-Carr...  They DO have available a "scratch resistant" type of Lexan at a higher price, but I cut-out and drilled  2 from the more inexpensive type.  1 is a "summer shield" about 5" shorter than my "winter shield".  Both are painted straight across (backside) on the lower portion somewhat at the same location as the stock shield.   More to hide my E-Z Pass than anything else.    Use the stock shield as a pattern, a very fine blade in a saber saw, and file the edges smooth.  There's no need to use the trim from the stock shield.  The lexan bends fairly easily, so matching up the holes shouldn't be a problem.  AFTER all drilling and cutting is done, then use the protective covering as a "masking" prior to painting the lower portion.  I've been VERY happy with my results.

OH, and I'll bet you can't break it with a hammer... ;D ;D ;D

FRUGAL... very frugal..... and nice too.

Concours Tech - Make Your Own Windshield

Here is my short round shield on my '88 (the other bike has a tall Cee Bailey):

And on my '01:

I painted the inside for the '88. The '01 has a little more of the inner dash showing and the painted area needs a little more.

If you just want to buy one here is a very short one in an assortment of colors: Kawasaki Concours `86-`05 G-Force SS 11" Tall, Kawasaki, KawasakiConcours8605GFss - Gustafsson Plastics, BikeScreen.com

I currently have the Rifle on my '01 Connie, which is taller than I prefer. It was on the bike when I bought it. The top of the shield is directly in my line of sight.

I had a BMW 1150RT with a Cee Bailey, which was shorter, but had a curved lip on it. I prefer that to the Rifle that I'm currently running. The curved lip allows you to run a shorter screen, but still have the protection from the buffeting wind at high speeds.

Just my .02 worth.

I've been doing some searching lately that might help you out some.  I currently run a stock shield with a Laminar Lip on it.  The lip adds about an inch and a half, and directs the wind to just above my eyebrow.  I'm 6 foot tall, for reference.  I've been looking for something to allow me to ride with a 3/4 helmet without creating so much wind noise.  I picked up a used rifle base and put an 18.5 inch homemade screen on it.  The air was hitting me at the same location as the stock/Laminar setup.  I found the wind noise to be a bit more though, I suspect because the smooth shield was flowing it more directly where the lip created just a slight bit of relief.  Just my seat-of-the-pants guesses though.  I've also noticed the Cee Bailey which is tall at 24.5 inches (you can get them taller too), but also has a lip on it.  I've read some people's reports, and have a friend with an FJR that has one.  It'll probably be the next one I try.

Hope this helps some.

Thanks for all of the input everyone!!!!! I think I am going to try my hand at engineering a new one. I like the idea that I can build something perfect for me instead of settling on a windshield I would likely be paying more for. I really appreciate the feedback everyone, Thanks a million ;)

I sure did "customize" my windshield this evening. Cut it down 6in and painted it black on the inside. It looks so much nicer to me and it is much easier to ride without the distraction of the distortion. It is a bit more windy but that's OK.

Concours Tech - Make Your Own Windshield

Just hope to say thanks to Willy and Duffy for sharing their experiences and instructions to make DIY windshield. First time doing this, not exactly following the instructions (too much detail and information for me), but I still have a new summer windshield to enjoy.
Different level of satisfaction by doing DIY, and a another level of joyfulness to have wind blown on my upper chest.
Plus, I see the cars in front of me completely, so I have much better feeling what they are doing (text message, make up, and of course irregular breaks).  It works really good to me.

That's what I do... read everything I can then do it my own way.  :great:

Would love to see some pics.

Different level of satisfaction by doing DIY, ...

Nah, I'm just too cheap to buy something I can make... though I must admit I often spend more than I would if I had just bought it. In this case, though, I got two new shields for half the price of the cheapest new one.

I put a smoked Givi on mine from Competition Accessories. Was only $99. I am 5'11" and it is right at nose level. Very quiet with excellent wind and rain protection.
If you don't have time to do it right, when do you have time to do it over.                                                                17" wheels, Nissin 4 piston calipers.1kg Sonic Springs.Cartridge Fork Emulators. KB Brace. Galfer brake lines  Free power mod.

KD I like the dark shields myself. I had a Tinted/smoked TARGA like Steve offered for many years.
Just realized that we Now have one on my sons Connie.
$50 is a good way to see if ya like it.
I now have a Tinted Cee Bailey.

Ride safe, Ted
