Title: Progressive or Sonic 1.2 Fork Springs?
Post by: Brian_Depew_LA on March 26, 2012, 12:40:46 pm
Which do you prefer??? I have progressive in my 87 and they are stiff. I am leaning towards the sonic springs for my 2005.

After (too) much thinking, calling and measuring......I choose the Sonic for more 'tuned' suspension. I choose 1.1 but do use whatever the calculator on the Sonic site recommends. I was forever grateful for note only a firmer, but also more compliant front end. +1 for Sonic YMMV

I had progressives in my bike for two weeks and took them out and sold them at a loss.
I switched to the Sonic 1.1's and never looked back, that was 7 years ago. But like Roger said choose the size that the chart recommends. And replace your fork oil with 15 wt.

I was leaning toward the sonic this time for my 05. I use the 15 W already in my 87 with the progressive springs. I will probably go with the 1.2. I am over 240 lbs and ride aggressive. Thanks for the info.

Choice number three: Racetech springs and emulators.  :)

I put progressives in my 91 and again in my 05, but I weigh 175 and like a smooth ride.

Choice #4 ... cut your stock springs down 4" and add emulators.

Brian,

Do the cut, I did the 5" cut on my stocks, come by and you can check it out. You may only need 4" since you are 1 up..LOL

For those who've cut the OEM springs have there been any issues of "coil bind" during compression?

Nope. You cut off the off the soft part  with the tight coils and you are left with what looks exactly like Sonic's.
Cut your springs and buy the emulators with the money you save on the springs.
That will be your best  'bang for the buck'.
