saddle bag antler latch alternative
« on: November 23, 2012, 04:02:55 pm »
well, as it seems if/when you dump the bike over, there is a very good probability that the latches say "peace out" as it happened to my dad, so he stole the bags from "my" bike  ???, anywho, i decided to do a cheap fixit to keep the bags from falling off with no latch to keep them on, tho my system works very well, it does add a slight inconvenience to the removal/installation process, but not much.

so what i did was (remove the antler and placed on the bag as if it was on the bike) then drilled through into the bag. (remove all contents first!)

now i drilled it over-sized and then put in a "heli-coil" ( i used a 5/16x20 since i had several on-hand)so the repeated use would not put a strain on the aluminum threads

then VIOLA! it's now secure to the antler.

I bolted mine to the antler years ago, but did it a little differently. I like your Heli-coil idea.  Pics below of how I did mine.  The thing to rememebr, though is that now if you contact a fixed object while under way, the bag will be much less likely to tear away, probably resulting in mich greater damage to the bike and rider.  I did it because the lower latches have some history of failing and the bags popping off while at speed.  The anti-theft factor is another good bonus.
