Tech Spec Tank Grips on my C10 and a 'custom' center pad.
« on: January 15, 2014, 10:11:27 pm »
Got the Tech Spec Tank Grips for Christmas from the lovely better half.

The side panels went on pretty much without a hitch.  Great product, I'm no
longer hesitant about clamping the tank with my knees. I always fear mucking up
the paint.  Very happy with the end result.

I purchased the (3) piece kit, which comes with a panel that goes where traditional
tank protectors go.  I had some serious trouble getting that piece to stay down
without buckling on the edges.  I tried using a heat gun to soften the grip material,
taping down the edges, nothing got that piece down the way it should've been.

I finally tried cutting slits to help the tank grip pad conform to the various curves,
but I wasn't very successful, and realized I screwed the pooch.  I accepted I had
a (2) piece kit now, and sent a message over to Tech Spec to let them know about
the difficulty I had putting that 3rd piece on.

Low and behold, Tech Spec pretty much insisted on sending me a replacement.
(Very pleased with customer service I received)  I opted for a square piece this time,
and figured I could cut strips to help the material conform to the curves of the tank.
I received that last piece quite quickly, and took it out to the garage and started
playing with ideas.  A Kawasaki "K" sticker on the side of my rollaway inspired this:

It's not perfect by any means, but I thought it added a little flair, and beat a couple of strips.
The smaller pieces adhered to the tank just as they were supposed to with no buckled edges.

I'm calling it a win!

Did you send a picture to Tech-Spec. They could probably sell a few of those. OR you could market it yourself.

Yes, I did send off the pic to Tech Spec, more so they could see what I did with the piece
they reshipped me.  More power to 'em if they can cut 'em...  I know it took me over an hour
to cut this out less than accurately, so I won't be doing it for profit, even more time to figger it out. :(

Looks good. I sent those people an email inquiry before Christmas and still have not gotten a reply. Is that the carbon fiber pattern? Looks good.

As my primary reason for using these was for tank protection, I chose the "High Fusion" material.
It's the thinnest they offer (.035") and dare I say it's grippy...  Other choices are thicker and offer
a bit of cushion as well as grip.

Robbie, or "RawB" is a rep for Tech Spec.  If you send him a PM, he should get back to you pretty quick.

Here's a better shot of the side grip (didn't think to post a pic of the whole set-up):

My thoughts ezactly... I wonder if this stuff can be cut on a vinyl cutting plotter, if so, any design could be cut, maybe even a COG logo.
