First Gear Heated Gear
« on: September 03, 2014, 05:32:22 am »
I bought a Firstgear 90 Watt Heated Jacket Liner and their heated gloves. Got the Firstgear Dual Remote Control Heat-Troller Kit to go with it. Got to give the set up a test today. It had just quit raining and it was 7C/45F.
The jacket heats up pretty much instantly. Although I was wearing my summer jacket with lots of air flow, it was too hot in only a minute or two. If I put just one of my regular liners in my summer jacket it would be fine on the coldest day I would every consider riding. The gloves have to be turned higher to feel the heat. They heat the back of the hand and fingers. I have heard that controlling the gloves and jacket with a single troller results in a coat too hot and gloves too cold. No idea but being able to control them separately is deluxe.
The controller is Velcroed to my glove box on the left side. Going to have to move it as it is in the least visible place possible when I am riding. It is easy to just feel where it is and adjust. The included velcro is next to worthless. I subbed it out with the velcro made for helmet cameras - premium. The velcro was the only weak link in the entire package. Everything looks well-made: electronics, gloves and jacket liner. It is somewhat pricey but I had done my first tour in a long while - 40 years and was feeling somewhat euphoric when I got home and bought a few cycle items.
I love the setup. It is going to extend my short Northern Canadian season. We get lots of beautiful sunny but cool days in the fall. I can hardly wait. If the quality does not live up to my expectations, I will update the post.

You will love the heated gear.

I've used it for the last 3 years and it really extends the season, cold is generally no longer an issue.
I'll ride down into the low 30s with no problem except my feet start to get cold after an hour or so,
and that's on a Suzuki Bandit with no weather protection.  Can't wait to try it out on my (new to me) C10.

I've ridden in some pretty cold weather - 30's, overcast and wet - with just the glove and sock liners under my winter gloves and ski socks. Other wear was underarmor cold gear upper under my winter coat, and summer pants. At most I've been a little cool.

Now I'm shopping some heated gear for the wife that incorporates it's own lithium (rechargeable) batteries. There's some nice stuff out there, and it reduces the wiring to the bike (which is yet another thing to wire up/plug in). Plus it would be good dual-purpose gear, useful for hikes, etc.

The only thing I regretted about buying heated gear was waiting so long to get it.

A great farkle for us northern riders.

The first electric gear post of the season!!! How I wish. It's still 90 degrees here. I'd LOVE to pull out my gear. Enjoy! ;D ;D

I have an Ansai Mobile Warming heated jacket that I bought on sale last year.  I love it.  It is a neoprene jacket with heated elements inside it.  Also has a thumb hole, so it stays in proper place, even when you put on your gloves.  You can choose to use or not use the thumb hole.  The only thing I don't like about the ANSAI gear, is it only comes with a 1 year warranty.  Jacket sells for about 165-185 dollars, depending on where you get it, and when.  The standard battery runs about 50 dollars, but you can get they extended one for 70 dollars, which is twice as big.  I wear it under my breathable summer jacket when it is hot during the day and very cool (38-55 F) at night.  Works great.  http://mobilewarminggear.com/
