Wind Buffeting on a 2003 ZG1000
« on: July 28, 2012, 04:23:31 pm »
I love this bike...........however I just installed a J&M headset in my helmet and the wind buffeting causes some interference with the sound at speeds above 55mph on the freeway.  I am almost 6'ft tall and have been considering a "slightly" taller windscreen with a vent as well.  Am I heading in the right direction to correcting this minor problem?

I'm 6ft and have an in helmet intercom - my mic is inside a full face helmet. But to cut down on the wind buffet I did install a slightly higher windshield right after I bought the bike, it did push the turbulence up higher and I didn't get as much wind noise. (I can't remember for the life of me which windshield I bought. It's been 7 years.)

I wish I would have installed one with a vent though - because in the heat down here a little more airflow is always welcome.

One other thought. My system is noise sensitive as to when to cut out the speakers when speaking, and it sets itself when you first energize it by plugging in the helmet. So one thing I always do is to have the bike revved up a little before connecting the helmet so the system's baseline would adjust to a normal than a static idle condition. Don't know if it really did any good or not, but it seemed to make a difference.

You might take a look at Saeng Ta micro swirl edging . It brought the airstream up about 4 inches.....just enough for me .

That's some pretty slick.... edging.  I need to work on exactly how much deflection I
need to get that turbulent air over my 6'4" 'frame'.  I'm hoping this may be an option.
Thnx Cra-z1000.

I have a 2003 also. I had the same buffeting sound. Changed to a Cee Baily windshield with a vent. It measures 22.5 inches tall for my 5 ft 10 height. I can see over the top but still get a bit of wind noise. I just crouch down slightly when talking on the radio. As an added bonus you will notice less buffeting when passing trucks.

I too went with Cee Baily with a vent.  It seems that the wind noise is louder than with the stocker, may be due to the vent, but it's definitely less buffeting now.

One of the first things I did was to get the Rifle tall windshield. At 6'5" I still have some buffeting, but after installing a summer windshield I must admit that I don't get much buffeting with the Rifle.

I am 6'4" and with the rifle tall screen the air hits high on my helmet. I also want an intercom soon, but not sure which way I will go.
