Yellow light from headlamp? SOLVED
« on: March 14, 2013, 01:36:05 am »
Solution - I found a yellow tinted shroud/shield insert in the headlight housing. I did not notice it when I changed the bulb.  I was trying to get the bulb out again, when the shroud rattled loose and fell out.  I don't know why someone would put this in, but it is out now and the light is no longer yellow!

Original Post:
The light from my headlight has a strong yellow tint to it. But the bulb is not yellow (I recently replaced it, so I know it is not yellow) and the lens is not yellow.  So what part of the assembly is yellow and why?

If I shine a flashlight into the front of the assembly, I can see yellow reflections inside.  I don't like the yellow headlight, so I ordered a replacement off of eBay.  It arrived with a broken mounting tab, so I will be returning it, but it at least has given me something to compare to. When I shine a flashlight into the new assembly, there is no yellow reflection.

So does anyone else have a Concours with a yellow headlight? Any idea what's up with that?

Can you check the voltage across the headlight terminals while the bike is running?  I suspect some voltage loss somewhere.  Check it if you can and report back

Can you see if the reflector maybe has oxidation (rust)?

It is supposed to nice weather this weekend, I'll take a look at both of those ideas.  Thanks for the suggestions.

Maybe see if you can swab the inside of your lens with something.  See if any residue comes off.

Has your bike been underwater before?  ;D

If you see yellow when you shine a light into the housing, the voltage or any electrical problem is likely ruled out. As others have said, sounds like rust or residue inside the reflector housing. If I'm not mistaken, it's a sealed unit and the only opening is where you insert the bulb. Perhaps you can "wash" out the inside from that opening with mild detergent, or perhaps glass cleaner.

I've seen those shields.  Usually they have more of a rainbow or blue tint to give the "look" of HID or other expensive lighting systems.  I think I've even seen them listed in some motorcycle catalogs.

Could it have come from a French sold bike (no joke). For many decades, all French licensed vehicles were required to have yellow headlights. This may have been Kaw's way of meeting that law.

I would expect the speedo to be in KPH, but it is not. Would there be other telltale signs of a GTR vs. a C-10?

That's not far fetch about it being overseas , my C10 was owned by an airforce member , its been to Belfast and back . Had the bike club membership sticker still on the windscreen when I bought it , a records search verified it was out of country for 2 years .The original dealership that sold it to him thought it quite ironic it made it back to the area where it was first sold .

This is a cheap add on dichroic lens made to have a prismatic appearance to the visible light spectrum.

These things are sold all over the world the manufactures claim they made you more visible due to the prismatic effect.

The French actually used a mineral to tint the Pyrex glass

Silver is used as the coating inside the lens and over time can turn into a rust color, you can send the assy. out to have it re-coated or buy a new one.

Or you can do what I do and run a Nokya Hyper Yellow  bulb, Although not legal for road use in the USA .

Allot of modern lamps utilize a Lenz technology developed for lighthouses called a Fresnel lens, unfortunately we do not have that luxury.

Another alternative would be to purchase a PIAA XTreme White bulb then micro polish the outer lens.

Don't forget to install a heavy duty high temperature connector and a relay pack for the headlight. :great:
