"Blind Spot" Mirrors, You Have To Have!!!
« on: February 14, 2016, 12:30:09 am »
Hi,
I was following a thread where Fais was recommending   a certain blind spot mirror.

Knowing how much Fais,  travels on 2 wheels and how disgusted I felt about my present mirrors, I was all ears!

To say we have crazy traffic in Florida is an understatement!

I ordered the new mirrors and installed them today.

Went for a ride and I'm blown away how nice they are and feel I was half way suicidal using the smaller original choice I made!

The new mirrors set to the outside as far as they will go allows you to pick up a vehicle on either side then follow it as it comes up beside you to where it is in your normal vison. (big mirrow, to small mirror, to eyes!)

Good idea on the mirror.

...since we are on the subject of mirrors.  This is what I do.

My right mirror is as the OP said, is far as it'll go to not see the side of the bike. To see blind spots

However my LEFT mirror is set to where I can see direcly behind me, or over the saddlebags.  Why?

#1 I can see if someone is tailgating while riding and if I will get killed by some a**$HOL if I jam the brakes, or if i need to flash my brake lights more if someone is behind me while making right turn while moving.

#2  While stopped at  stop light/sign I can see if someone is failing to STOP at the signal light behind me, skidding, or is otherwise going to smash me into 150 pieces. ( I never shift to neutral at signal lights, plan my escape )

#2 I can see if someone is passing on the left on two lane roads, mainly other motorcycles

#3 I can see other motorcycles in a group better

I've trained myself to always turn my head left and right to LOOK when changing lanes.

Greg, thanks for the update. Are those little mirrors the adjustable kind? I've sat on Faisals bike and do like them a lot.

Hi,
        YES!  :-[

They are adjustable, forgot to mention that. ::)

So far they seem to stay adjusted! :great:

This actually fixed an aggravation I had, with the small crummy mirrors I was using! ;D

How do you think they would work near the lower inside part of the mirror (that is where i am just seeing the bags anyway)??

Hi,
IMO, I don't think as good as where I have mine in the pic, HOWEVER!

As stated these mirrors will adjust to a degree and might just work where you want to put them! :great:

I'm tall, so maybe my big mirror is adjusted different than yours? :o

This would change the "base line"!

I like that I can pick up the approaching car in the main mirror and then follow it to the small mirror on the outside then it is beside me and in my vison.

I did a trash can test, using it to represent a car grill in the driveway, adjusting before my ride! ;D

For me the lil mirrors work best mounted as suggested above. I can't see anything but bags in the stock mirror in this area anyways. Mounting the lil mirrors on the outside as SG suggests, for me, actually blocks some usable area of the stock mirrors.

Gregg - thanks man and I'm really glad you got them. I no longer feel silly for having tried multiple mirrors and in various locations - these really do me right and I hope everyone benefits from this information. When we ride often and a lot it's good to have things set up -)

I have 4" ones on my KLR. The foam tape holding them on also reduced vibes. - the 4" ones offer a LoT of vis :great:

Hi,
        Fais, thanks for sharing! :beerchug:

I think I was actually on borrowed time trying to use those little quarter size mirrors I was using, and was never comfortable with them! :(

Nicole, the mirrors are cheap enough, and I hope everyone goes to something at least this big for their own safety. :great:

You can always get some tape and play with different places to set them and try the "trash can test"! ;D

I KNOW you will be better off, no matter where you put them, compared to what I had! :-[

Instead, I would rather have a set of eyes in the back of my head, like my mom always said she had. Trust me, she had me looking thru her hair, I was convinced she had them.

I have the same rotatable adjustable mirrors ( this changes the angle) located in the same spot, have since the day I bought my 08.
for me they work great, I have them rotated so I get the widest spot away from the bike.

I prefer the inner and upper location as IMHO, it's an unused spot of the stock mirror.

I have them pointed on the inner portion of my truck mirror. I can remember having them on the inner portion of my '09 Connie mirrors.

For me the outer edge works best now. Whatever works for the rider is going to be fine. Anything is a whole lot better than nothing.

Gotta love the adjustability.

Hi,
I'm sure it works well..... :great:

But to me it looks kind of obtrusive when mounted??? ;D ;D ;D

Of course obtrusive is better than "wacked"! :-[

Sourced from KMart, got the smaller of the two rectangular. Rectangular seems to provide more wide view with less vertical distortion compared to round type.
Mounting inboard mostly only give up the view of the bags.
