Good idea on the mirror.
...since we are on the subject of mirrors. This is what I do.
My right mirror is as the OP said, is far as it'll go to not see the side of the bike. To see blind spots
However my LEFT mirror is set to where I can see direcly behind me, or over the saddlebags. Why?
#1 I can see if someone is tailgating while riding and if I will get killed by some a**$HOL if I jam the brakes, or if i need to flash my brake lights more if someone is behind me while making right turn while moving.
#2 While stopped at stop light/sign I can see if someone is failing to STOP at the signal light behind me, skidding, or is otherwise going to smash me into 150 pieces. ( I never shift to neutral at signal lights, plan my escape )
#2 I can see if someone is passing on the left on two lane roads, mainly other motorcycles
#3 I can see other motorcycles in a group better
I've trained myself to always turn my head left and right to LOOK when changing lanes.
