There are basically on;y two options. Givi monoKEY allows the trunk to attach to an after-market rack using three points, two mushroom head parts at the front and a latch at the rear (I use the SW-MOTECH kit). Everything else needs a universal mounting plate that allows the trunk to mount to it. Givi calls that monoLOCK and everyone else supplies the plate with the trunk IE: Kawasaki stock trunks.
As to the possibility of the stock rack breaking, I think the record goes to a gentleman in New Zealand who told me he broke 4 plastic racks before ordering mine.
These two photos pretty well cover your choices. Exceptions are the Sears/JC Whitney that MAY fit the SW-MOTECH kit.
Givi also sells the SR-410 mount that essentially bypasses the stock rack and provides a platform for their trunks.

Man Phil's rack looks so much better than anything else out there (don't take that wrong...I'm not looking at Phil's "rack", I'm looking at his rack....oh heck...never mind).  Nice work Phil.  When I'm ready to buy a trunk, you will be the first stop!

Okay, I think I understand it.
Part of my confusion is that I have a Suzuki (kappa) trunk I got for my Burgman.  It used the mushroom head mounting you speak of.  I happened to have an older givi plastic mount plate that uses the tabs and I got it to fit on the Vstrom rack.  I found the Suzuki trunk snapped right into place on it so I assumed that a givi, or kappa bag would go on either mounting system but apparently not so.

I just got a 2012 C14 and had the dealer install the Kawasaki trunk/backrest pad before I picked it up so I don't know how it mounted to the bike.  Took by teenage daughter for a ride and when I passed a car by downshifting/accelerating she thought she was going off because the trunk pitched and wobbled so much.  So you are telling me that this aftermarket rack will eliminate the wobble of the trunk?  If so do I need anything extra not used when the dealer mounted it?

I have my passenger backrest mounted to mine...

In addition to making my wife more comfortable, it works well as a support for luggage...

Totally random observation here, but what is it about Connie riders and Subarus? Nearly every person I know/have met in this group either has one, or is going to buy one. Must be part of our "fast and frugal" ethic!

Love Phil's rack. Installed a Givi Maxia 55 on it and it is superb.

I have an Impreza right now. Thinking of a BRZ or maybe a WRX in a few more years, once the Connie is paid off.

I'm guilty, have an 05 Impreza SI and it's approaching 200K without any issues....cept an occasional headlamp bulb.

I have an 86 model Brat being driven by my 89 model brat.  Does Phil have a rack to fit the Brat?  The 86 model, not the 89 model... nothin' fits him.

I always find the idea of people from my generation driving vehicles that are older than them to be quite amusing.  :)
