AST extra tail light
« on: October 19, 2018, 04:53:24 pm »
http://www.advancedsporttouring.com/Concours_LED_taillight_and_blinkers_p/c14-23.htm

Does anyone have any experience with this tail light by chance? I was looking at Hyperlites but then I came across this light and like it a lot more.

Also, I know that many people had issues with Advanced Sport Touring in the past but does anyone know if they have changed their ways and gotten better?

Do a search on the Forum.
Someone recently posted that they installed a set of these.
These are nice and come with the wiring harness that allows you to just plug them into the system.

I went the "frugal" route (Ted-like).   :D

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07332VHSW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Not as wide as the AST and don't have a mounting bracket, but it does add turn signals. I placed one on the back of the stock luggage rack using the tape with a small tie wrap on each end to insure it stayed there. I made a small bracket that I mounted to the bottom of the license plate for a second one. They seem to work great. I'll try get a photo or two tomorrow if you would like.

That light looks like it may be hidden if you put a trunk on the rack.

I can wire this, but I'm not great at describing the wiring.
  :))

I have Ardmore lights in my Kawasaki Trunk.
I wired them into the Kawasaki wires that are located below the seat..
When I wired the Ardmore's in, I cut the ground and brake light wires and added the Flash/strobe controller box into the circuit.
This makes the Ardmore brake lights on my trunk strobe 4 fast/4 slow/stay on, plus I have running and signal lights..

I did not use the light that was mentioned earlier... Instead, I replaced my License plate light with one of these.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/12V-Smoke-20LED-Motorcycle-Brake-Tail-Turn-Signal-License-Plate-Integrated-Light-/113314554910?hash=item1a6212e41e
On it, I wired the running lights to the Kawasaki wire {in order to light my license plate}..
I tied the brake and turn signal wires together and wired them into the same ground and brake light wires as my Ardmore system.....
Because the brake lights are red, and the turn signal lights are amber, this combination is interesting!
I also added a Flash/strobe controller box into that circuit.
This makes the brake lights over my License plate strobe 4 fast/4 slow/stay on.

Because I used 2 separate strobe/flasher relays, the 2 systems are slightly out of sync and the result is a "light show" when I touch my brakes...

I've not read anything positive about AST's customer service in a long while.

Can those of you who have transacted recently with this business please add your positive/negative comments??

Thanks,

GR, I've ordered several parts from AST over the years.
I've never had a bad experience when dealing with them.
   Unfortunately, I know some have.

I doubt they would still be in business if the majority of their shipments were not like mine..

jackcarls0n, I wish I could help you there. But I'm too dumb to get a video to attach.
I know there are better and brighter lights.  The AST mentioned at the start is a very good way to do the install.
I just like my solution.. (and I like to tinker)

I posted my notes not to say I have the best.
My thought was to show that it can be done for less $$ than the best,,, with a little resourcefulness.
PM me and I'll be glad to offer any assistance I can.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Ghostrider, that was my concern as well about how they are at shipping now. I know they had some issues a few years back but then I hadn't heard anything about them for awhile so I'm glad to hear they may be doing a little better!

It's a slick setup, and I like that they offer a series of plug-n-play harnesses to mate-up to the Kawi molex connectors in the tail.

I'd be all about this, if I could figure out if those nice pre-fabbed harnesses played nice with my Admore harnesses that are currently powering my Givi55 top box.

Anybody had any experience with mating these two systems??

GR, I also have the Admores.
The AST harness is just a "T" that plugs into the Kawasaki system.
It will plug in and work exactly like my home made system.

I have a set. I did well with AST for the longest time. Last spring I got to experience the down side. Frustrating.

Best thing I can tell you is to get hold of him. If he has it in stock, order it and he will ship. I did best when I contacted him by email and called. Once I talked to him I asked present stock. If he had it I said I would order immediately and I got it pretty quick.

THe lights are spectacular. I just put the bike in the barn about an hour ago and had to walk back there and smile because I know they can see me. I do not think the trunk is a problem. They mount on the underside of the rack. Make sure you got it clean and can put it where you want it because that 3M stuff sticks like a bear.

Given the stickyness of the 3M tape, would you recommend finishing anything I need to do on the luggage rack before installing the light? I have a Phils rack currently and need to install the SW-Motech kit when I get the new top case. Would I be better off finishing the install on the rack before doing the tail light?

I will have to take a look at the rack. I would probably finish first and then install. I switched from a Phil's Rack to a Pirate's Lair so I had to remove and get fresh 3M tape. Arduous.

Second time around I think I took the rack off and turned it up to make sure I could place it from the bottom. Gave me a littel slack with the wiring.
