Title: Aux light attachment to front struts.
Post by: n3nman on February 24, 2018, 01:46:27 am
I am a big fan of having my cheap Ebay lights mounted on the front struts (Low). Came up with this idea after cracking a front fairing by using the mounting hole. These work really well Very solid with lots of fine adjustments.

Looks good.  Did you make those brackets?  If not, where did you buy them?  I'd be interested in a pair, myself.

Ditto that, curious to know where you got those.

I too, tried to use my fender mount bolts and cracked my front fender .....BADly.  >:(

Nice work.

Made them from 4130 .80 thick steel. You can probably mount most lights on them, I just like the 10W ebay spot lights. Piece of steel, torch, and something to wrap them around to get the correct curve. Went up one grip on the 2 bolts and used a locking nut on the back side of the mount that supports the light. Comes out of the fender just right with good clearance on everything.
Once they are mounted on fender support you can adjust everything with fender on. See pic.

You should sell those.

I bet you'd get a fair amount of buyer's here.  :great:

Hey man! Is there any way you could make me a pair of those? I will compensate you obviously...

Materials will be in Monday and should have 5 or 10 sets done within a week or so. Do you all want me to supply the longer bolts with them as a ready to fo set in flat black. And a #10 hole drilled for light attach? I can then post a shipped price.

Thanks

Do you have a ballpark price in mind?

I like the idea of black hardware, but I typically use stainless because the humidity in NC eats everything else.

I'm in for a set two sets as well. :beerchug:  I'd prefer that you included the longer bolts so that I don't have to chase 'em down.

I have gotten a number of messages about wanting a set of these so here is the deal.

Details on the brackets.

Made from .80 thick 4130 Aircraft steel.
I make each one by hand and are test fit on my C14.
They are drilled for the 2 mounting holes and a single mount hole for the light attach.
Bead blasted then primed, then painted with rattle can Flat black paint.
I will include 4 plated bolts to replace the 4 original mounting bolts (need a slightly longer grip).
You must mount everything with Blue loctite.
On the bolt that mounts the light I used a low profile lock nut. You could also use loctite but the nut must not be to deep. There is enough room for it between the mount bracket and strut but not much more.
You will have to take the front fender off to mount the bracket but after that you can do everything from the outside with the fender on.

They are solid and have no movement to them, They work great. If you get a pair and do not like them for any reason just send them back at your cost and I will refund all you money minus shipping.
The material gets here tomorrow and I will make 10-15 sets all at once. Should take me 7-10 days to ship them..

Cost for a set (with 4 bolts) is $45 for a pair plus shipping. So I am just going to call it $49 delivered in the CONUS. If you want a pair just PM your shipping info and what you want.I am making these by hand in a basement. And I will not be offended in the least if you do not want them. Like I said if you get them and you think they are not worth it, no probelm just send them back. I will not take any money till they are ready to ship.

If you have any questions just shoot me a email.

Thanks, Lee

Which lights are people planning on using with these?

Lee, which ones did you use?

I used these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MDJK1AJ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MDJK1AJ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

I have them on 3 different bikes. Never had one fail (even on the bouncy end of the forks) and I think they look great. Lots of light for recognition. I use the "Spot" lights not the "Flood" lights.

Should have the brackets ready to ship by next weekend. Only 4 slots left.

Thanks, Lee

Thanks for the link. I have Mondo Moto MM-10’s and like the bright white pattern. When I saw these, I figured what the heck, for that price, I’ll buy them as a just in case I ever need them replacement.   I got the Flood lens version, to match the MM-10’s. These guys are actually better made, a bit heavier, and the lens is slightly larger. The leads are only about 10 inches long, but should splice right into the existing Mondo-Moto switch and wiring.  I’m glad I picked them up. Now for the better mount option in this thread......

Update,

All the mounts are coming along well. Should be painted this weekend and shipped this Monday. Switching to gloss black from flat black. Cost of brackets might be a little less as well. Had enough interest to make a fixture tool to produce them quicker. I will email everyone who has contacted me soon with info.

Thanks for all the interest.

All brackets are ready to ship.

Sorry for the delay. I think all the brackets I made are spoken for, 13 sets with bolts is what I ended up with. They came out really nice, better as I went along. Sending out PM to all that sent me a PM wanting a set. If you have and do not hear from me today then send me another please. Final price is slightly less then I estimated. Shipping was a little less then my estimate. Delivered price with 4 longer bolts is $46 Paypal Friend.  If you get them and do not think they are worth it I will be happy to refund your money.

If anyone back out or if I have extra I will post it.

Thanks

Couple of instructions to note:.

The attach bracket on the back of the fork casting (part the fairing threads into) is aluminum. Start the bolts by hand they are easy to cross thread. Use blue (med) loctite in the bolts.
Other then that they are straight forward but if you have any questions email me or call me. All PM's going out have my info.  Please let me know how they work.

Thanks, Lee

What torque value do you suggest for the mounting bolts?

Tracking shows that mine arrive today.  So no torque values for the mounting bolts?  Just good and tight?
Title: Re: Aux light attachment to front struts.
Post by: 4Bikes on March 29, 2018, 07:42:48 pm
Your nice instructions shipped with the brackets explained the bolts. Tighten to specs and use locktite. To me that will be good and tight.

Got my brackets today, MIGHT get them installed tomorrow (probably not).

For those that have extra LED lights on their bike, relay or direct wire?
Title: Re: Aux light attachment to front struts.
Post by: 4Bikes on March 29, 2018, 11:45:41 pm
I did my lights direct to my fuse block. Needed an on off switch that my state inspection seems to require. Mondo motor provided a complete kit including the water proof switch.
Title: Re: Aux light attachment to front struts.
Post by: n3nman on March 30, 2018, 01:06:12 pm
The lights I used 10W do not require a relay. I picked up power off of the connector on the left side in front of the Glove box (2012). Ran it thru a "marine" waterproof switch so I can turn them off if I wanted. I really never turn them off. If I did it again I would just locate the switch kind of hidden somewhere near the glove box for the rare time I turned them off. I put mine in the "panel" and is a waste.

I could not fine a torque value in the book on the 2 bolts for the fairing. Nice and tight but do not over do it.

I installed the light brackets yesterday.  They are exactly as Lee described, if not better.  The lights and the lower fork assembly are now one solid unit.  There is virtually no flex, and they look like they came from the factory.  Nice job Lee!   :beerchug: :great:

Your local autoparts store should stock an assortment of hookup wire.  Not the best selection and certainly not the best price.....but would work..

I now have a set of these brackets I can't use. I bought them before engaging the brain to consider if they would work on Ohlins forks. They will not.

I will donate them for an OTP auction provided they bring in enough to make it worth while for me to ship from Germany at my own expense.

Lucky indeed!!!  :)  Still trying to get the C14 approved by the German TUV (DMV). Went it to Munich (Munchin) for the inspection. The motorcycle specialist forgot our appointment and wasn't there. His supervisor did the inspection but wouldn't issue paperwork until the specialist returns from vacation. Basically anything not OEM must have EU certification, in writing, in your possession and for the specific year and model vehicle.  >:( . These Germans sure are tuff folks. But they do have great beer. :beerchug:
Things in question; S/S brake lines, Clearwater lights, Dunlop Q3+ tires, Ohlins forks and I need a rear facing red reflector.

I'll probably give the light brackets to Hans for auction here. Thanks.

Got mine mounted and wired up today. The spots (the ones recommend from Amazon) are easily pointed. I did have to get a shorter bolt for mounting the lights brackt to these brackets as it was too long and hitting the shock housing.

First day riding to work after getting the lights mounted up. I can say, more people made room for me as I was splitting lanes than normal. It was noticeable how many more did, so the lights work! I may adjust them down a little more, but they are not pointed high.

Thanks for making the brackets!
