Custom Gumby reservoir socks
« on: July 16, 2014, 07:59:43 pm »
So that guy with the chameleon bike stops by the other day and I see he has some Ohlins reservoir socks on his bike. I think those look pretty cool but I don't need a logo on them or anything so I say I am going to go buy some black wrist bands and throw them on. He says why don't you put a Gumby patch on them.

So being the EBay whore that he is, the next day he sends me a link to these ~2" little Gumby patches. I buy them $9.95 shipped. That day I run to Dick's to grab some black wrist bands. Obviously there is nothing without a logo on them, so I buy a set of Under Armour bands $9.99. The Gumby patches show up and I have no idea how to sew so I take them down to the cleaners to get them sewed on $10.

Here are my $29.94 custom Gumby reservoir socks.  :)

From reservoirsocks.com
What are they for?
Traps and absorbs brake fluid that's vented from the reservoir
Prevents brake fluid from getting on your helmet and/or your motorcycle, damaging paint and corroding metals
A number of race tracks ask racers to cover their reservoirs as they also assist in containing any brake fluid that may be spilled onto the track in the event of an unfortunate accident
Keeps direct sunlight off of the brake and clutch reservoirs
Prevents break down and discoloration of your brake fluid and plastic reservoirs caused by suns damaging UV rays

My take:
Purely aesthetic

<sarcasm>

I have been riding motorcycles for YEARS and never had my fluids protected.  I can't believe the manufacturers have let me ride with such risk!  Perhaps the government should institute a sock law to go along with helmet laws!

Just because this is the most-ests fun-ests thread I have seen in a long time AND because I love a good rhubarb I thought I would throw this out there for your considerations.

Wrist bands v. Wrist wraps

http://t.sportsauthority.com/products/13158008

Okay this could get ugly so lets keep it clean. Wraps v. Bands is an age old dilemma between many a biker. One side argues protection while the other camp views it as an aero thing.

Does the logo go in front or facing the rider? To paraphrase the movie Bull Durham, the rose goes in front big guy.

Maybe this is simply a cultural difference but I am sure that this affects the resale value as well.

Wait! I got it! Golf club warmers! Concours riders don't play golf anyway, unless someone has found a way to mount clubs on the Connie...

I'm sure someone has figured out how to carry clubs... but why would you?
If it's good enough weather to golf, it good enough weather to REALLY enjoy riding, so why would anyone in their right mind want to waste time golfing when you could be riding  :motonoises:

Under what conditions does this actually occur?

Not a clue.

It was something to throw some more money at.
