Title: Does Tip Over Protection work?
Post by: 4Bikes on August 17, 2011, 02:25:07 pm
I'm considering tip over protection for a C-14, either the R&G Adventure Bars, or more likely the Top Block.  My big question: has anyone ever tipped over and actually tested the effectiveness of these systems?  Did the  protection actually save the skins, bars , pegs and bags?  What did the protection look like after the drop, and did that protection itself need to be replaced?  I'm just trying to justify the cost and evaluate the effectiveness.

If I were you I would cross post this to the C14 Accessories section.  I expect though that if they did not work they will not be selling them long.

I'm thinking by the lack of response that no one had to try the protection?  Makes me think of the Deer Whistles I put on my truck 11 years ago.  I was never sure they worked, but never had to really test them either.  So by buying a preventer, I made sure the actual need never came up.  So now I'm thinking Top-Block and Deer whistles and I'm covered.

They do make the Deer Whistles for Motorcycles.

they are controversial in looks, but my mcenterprises bars work extremely well.  no part of the bike comes close to the ground.  with some of the other protectors, you still need to find something to protect your bags...

I like the R&G tip over protection (and the highway pegs!).  I am wondering how much of a hassle it is to take remove them when the fairing panels need to be removed?   Looks like removing 3 blots and they slide out - correct? Also, do they block access to the battery on the right side?

I have the MC Enterprise bars front and back and not only do they work, they keep
the bike from going all the way to the ground and make it easier to pick up.
Nothing touches except the bars.
Looks are in the eye of the owner, not everyone likes them but they are effective.

Laker looking good. Keep working at it, I like it though.
Does this protect the bags as well?

Laker, nice work on the tipover protection.  Do the bars hit shins or lower leg?

Laker, Looks interesting, I do like that the support is lower on the bike.  I'd be interested.

Mine keep the bags off the ground about the same as the topblocks that Fred has pictured. The bags will touch the ground on initial impact but with very little force. I'm going to come up with something to prevent the paint from getting scratched when they do make contact.

Laker, nice work on the tipover protection.  Do the bars hit shins or lower leg?

My shins don't hit the bars. I chamfered the end of the upper mounting tube and that took care of it. Shins should slide by in a crash.

I'm going to come up with something to prevent the paint from getting scratched when they do make contact.on the tipover protection.

I suggested to Murph awhile back that if someone could just make a nice oval patch of rubber about 1/4 or 1/2 inch thick with some 3m self adhesive on the back (like used for molding trim) you could stick it onto the lower front corner of the bags where they contact and at least prevent the paint damage that occurs when they touch down. It would only take about $2 worth of rubber and another $1 worth of adhesive. I've been meaning to make some myself but just haven't gotten around to it.

I like those that keep the bags and bike off the ground....the ones on my FJR basically save the tupperware on the main fairing but your mirrirs (no big deal) and baggage (BIG deal) are screwed if you tipped it over.
Havent yet installed any on the C14 for that reason.

I'm getting quite a few requests for info on these, so I better get busy. I've got my bike torn apart so as to make final improvements, drawings and list of material. Thanks for the kick in the butt.

Keep us updated.  They look a lot like the top block, I hope they're not that expensive...

It's all about priorities bro, drink cheap beer for a couple months and walla, pocket $ for Top Block, they blend so nicely on the Connie nothing out there compares to em', worth every penny IMO!

ZG, those Top Blocks are beautiful on the '08-'09. They flow with the shape of the fairing and I like the look of the brackets. It's just too bad that they don't make one that looks as good for the '10+ or I would have some by now.

Yeah totally agree.  Can't bring myself to pull the trigger (yet) for the Top Blocks for my '12 just it just doesn't have those same lines.

Is there enough room on them to rest your feet for awhile.... when the bike is upright

For Top Block I'd say no IMO.

Unless you ride in ballerina slippers... (http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb336/jaywilcox/smiley_dunno.gif)

ehhh....what kind of news were you looking for?

Mine are still on my '10, and they still don't look as good as the ones for the '08-'09 models.
I doubt that's the news you were looking for (i.e. old news). I am working on how to make them
look better, it may be new news when I figure that out.  :)

Thanks Marty,
I should have been more specific. I meant, any news on the ones laker was making himself. Thanks for the info.
