Finally got my KDS V.3 kit up and running;)
« on: October 22, 2013, 10:52:40 pm »
Hi Folks,

Not sure how many other members on here have their own KDS kit?...I know of at least one other member.

I picked one up back in the spring and it has been collecting dust until tonight...lol. I finally got around to installing the software on an old laptop and tried communicating with my 2010 C-14. Anyway, it works like a charm. No fault codes in ECU memory/history which is a good thing, and the diagnostic functions are a slick feature. I was able to turn the fuel pump on and off, injectors, etc.

Is it a must have item for the DIY garage? No, not really, but I do work on a fair amount of bikes besides my own, so I hope to get at least a little use out of it.

That's all...it's kinda neat to play with, but there's not a whole lot to it.

I'd love to get my hands on one,  better yet surely someone could come up with a least an app that would allow a smart phone to register TPS or new FOBS?

You also need a laptop to connect it to.

Yup, that's what it took me months to get it set-up. I had to get an old laptop with XP on it. My home laptop has Windows 8 and it wouldn't work.

Bumping up this topic because I'm researching the KDS. Where does this connect on the 2010+ model? I found an instruction PDF on-line for 2008 model but no where does it discuss the connection points it actually reads as if an adapter isn't needed for the concours?

Beside the KDS Converter do you need the 2 possible adapter cables or can the adapter connect right to the harness somewhere?

Hi Knoxswift,

There are two capped plugs under your seat. They are behind the tool kit box, on the right hand side of the bike, stuck inside a foam block. You need two different harnesses for the first (08/09) and second gen (10+) Concours-14's.

Does that answer your question ok?

Yes, I believe that does. The Instruction manual did talk about 2 different adapter cables. I'm going to assume one cable to adapt for each of the two plugs?

I do remember seeing those capped off connectors when adding my trunk wiring. Now I know what they are for.

Last, it seems that the KDS Software is easy to come by. My local dealer is able to order it. The problem is the KDS Converter? It seems to be listed as discontinued on his parts lookup. Anyone know the superseded number for that? It can't possibly be discontinued but possibly updated?

There are two plugs, one for the main ECU, and one for the ABS ECU. Then there are different cables for the different model motorcycle...ATV, watercraft, etc. One USB cable from your laptop to the KDS Adapter, then an assortment of cables from the adapter to the various bikes.

I don't know if it is discontinued or not. What KDS adapter are you checking on? P/N 57001-1648? There may be a newer adapter...I'm not sure. These are the ones most dealers have since they ordered them back in 2007-ish. The software and cables are no problem....they're not even expensive, but the KDS adapter is. As far as I know, the adapter is around $800. As long as you have the current software, these older adapters work just fine on the later model motorcycles. It may be that they're not available to the public anymore as an over the counter item...I dunno.

Interesting. Yes, that is the part number I found in the PDF.
Maybe there is a new adapter and as you said it's not coming up due to it might not be allowed to be sold as a "Part."
I'll keep hunting ebay as well.
Interested in this because my closest dealer is 100 miles or so.

I've also followed the treads on Flashing. Too bad the Flashing and the Diag can't be an all-in-one solution but it sounds like this converter is the key. I'm guessing it's just an USB to CANN buss converter with the proper pin-out for Kawi. I suppose the one's for cars could be adapted if one new the exact pinouts.
All the custom encryption is done by software I would guess?

Thanks for the info. If you hear of a KDS setup for sale please let me know.

Yes sure, I'll keep my eyes open for you. They do pop up on Ebay from time to time...that's where mine came from. I was angry at my dealer one day...lol, over an issue with programming a Keyfob to my bike, and I went home and ordered my own KDS that same day...lol.

Personally, I wish they all used OBDII connections/protocol. I have some experience with the TuneECU software that Triumphs use...and also KTM and Aprilia?...I forget now. Anyway, with those, all you need is the correct OBDII to USB cable with the FTPI chipset, and you're connected. Costs about $30 bucks, and then you have the same capabilities as KDS annnnd ECU flashing;).

I can give you anything that you may need for your KDS with regards to digital....documents, etc, but they're not much good without the hardware.

Hey...check this out....KDS adapter and a couple cables...just need the software and a couple more cables which are readily available, and you're good to go. That's actually a pretty good deal IMHO.

Edit: Sorry...didn't realize at first that it was an auction and not buy-it-now...lol. It's currently a good deal, but it depends on how much it actually goes for. I've seen complete kits on Ebay for $800.

I did see that very auction. I was considering it but he said the software isn't included.
I have it on my watch list. I'll make a decision on the last day as many do on ebay, LOL!

I'm new to the world of computerized motorcycles. My last bike (Well still have it) was a 1986 Goldwing. Not much tuning in the computer.

I have more experience with CANN on trucks. So was looking into the KDS. I agree, KeyFob is an issue. Mine issue was one of the TPS sensors died, I had to drive 100 miles for the new sensor and then they didn't have the ability to register it. I had to drive another 50 miles to a dealer that did have the KDS. SO, much like you, I think the KDS would pay off in my situation. I "Obviously" keep motorcycles for a long time,  :))

Thanks for all the info. If I get my hands on one of these kits I'll hit you up for the document. :beerchug:

Hello everyone - i just ran across this site as I was doing a little research for the KDS 3 kit - part number 57001-1687A

I know I am new to the site and to be honest I only joined to tell those looking that I have a KDS kit -- my background: My family owned a Kawasaki Dealership (Clems Kawasaki) from 1969-2009 closing due to economy -- right before we closed we were issued by Kawasaki the KDS3 kit -- I kept it as we have a race shop where we build dragbikes and Micro/mini sprint motors and I thought maybe I would use it.  Well other than plugging it in a few times it has just sat on the shelf.   It is complete as a dealer woudl get it from Kawasaki -- even still has instruction manual  and carrying case.    My research to see what the selling price goes brought me to this page -- I know jumping on sites to sell things seems shady but I know these things are hard to find.   If you woudl like to reach me - look me up or talk - our shop site is osrbikes.com and you can call 317-523-4049 or email osrbikes@gmail.com and I can send pics of what i have.

I have seen these sold on completed auctions for over $500 - I'll sell this basically new kit - for $450 shipped

Cool beans. I have the exact same kit, with some extras and updated drivers, and it works like a charm.

Don't feel bad KnoxSwift...it happens to me all the time...lol. ;D

Are you still watching the kit on Ebay?

I see it's up to $200 bucks now.

It would require at least three more cables, and of course the software....in case you're trying to figure out a reasonable bidding price. Also, the adapter looks like the right one in the picture, but I'd confirm the part number before bidding just in case.

Wow, it ended up going for $262 and change.

I couldn't see the number clearly either, but it looked like the correct one.

Yeah, I see went for quite a bit without the software.
I e-mailed the seller and the part # he sent back wasn't the xxx-1648 it was for the "WaterCraft" version. Unless he e-mailed me the wrong Part Number, I couldn't make it out on the picture either.

Eh, I'm sure a whole kit will turn up sooner or later....

Well, got my hands on a KDS.
Then I finally got my hands on an old Laptop that can run XP.
NOW...seems my 2013 ECU diag port is not the same size as the KDS unit I have. Someone mentioned there is an adapter cable for the KDS for 2010+ concours. Would any of you who have this kit know the part number for the 6PIN KDS to the Smaller/miniature 6 PIN connector on the 2010+ C14? (Specifically I have a 2013).
I know I have the right KDS as when I go to install the software it shows the C14 as an option, it has a picture pointing me to the diag connector. BUT The USB adapter and C14 connector or most definitely not the same size. There must be an adapter cable I don't know about?

THANKS!

Hey Knoxswift,

Glad to hear that you got yourself a KDS kit;).

To connect to the 2010-up C14, you'll need a Y cable, part # 57001-1745. They're on Ebay from time to time...so it's worth a search. If not, you can order from Momma Kaw;).

The original C14 cables that came with the kits were straight cables, part # 57001-1649, and part # 57001-1688.

Do the cables you have still have the Kawi part numbers on them?

If you need any other help, let me know. I can take some pictures if you need them.

Cheers,
Rem ;D
