Santa is bringing me a new radar detector for the bike this Christmas, how is everyone mounting theirs?  I'd rather not put it on the handlebars themselves (have had a couple suggestions to just slap on some industrial strength velcro on the brake resevoir and mount it that way).

Which detector are you using, are you using supplemental LED flashers or another way to know when it's been triggered, and how are you mounting the detector itself?

(would love to see pics and recommendations for brackets, etc)

Thank you in advance!

Pete

I use a RAM platform that is magnetic. You attach the metal plate to the radar detector bottom using 3m double sided tape. It is not coming off this platform the magnets are very strong. The RAM platform is attached using a 1 1/2" long RAM arm to a RAM ball which is attached to the front master cylinder screws. Longer screws were used.

I have been using a Valentine1 detector for 12 years. Current one is the latest greatest I upgraded to this past August. I grab power from the socket on the dash using the detectors socket power adapter down to the power box needed from Valentine1 to use on a motorcycle. I use the Marc Parnes LED flasher lights mounted directly above the gauges for alert. Have been using the LEDs for years and they work for me. Get my attention even on the brightest of days. Tried audio in the beginning and hated the chirping in my helmet.

Best pic I can come up with at the moment.

Excuse my white power cord  :) had a malfunction with the black one and had to use this one in a tight and I have not replaced it back to a black one. Kinda like the white as it is easy to find in the dark.

I too use a RAM plate type, but I use Velcro and a small strap to keep in in place. I hard wire my Escort IX. Best $$ spent ever running a radar detector. Been using them since 1973.

The new crop of detectors are amazing, I really liked my 9500ix but the new IX blows it out of the water.

One of the best out there is the Uniden R3, it beats all the detectors in regards to range and has GPS and lockout features, although manual inputs unlike the Escorts.

BTW, get the HARD device from Legal Speeding for your helmet, been using them for at least 10 years. The new HARD is a way better than the 1st gen.

I have seen some use the x-wing/arm cell phone holders for the detectors on RAM mount arms. Pretty neat setup actually.

Seems to be an easier setup to me.

There is only one manufacturer of a waterproof motorcycle  radar detector.
Mine came with the LED visual   indicator and it is bright.'
It is also the only one with an optional (hidden) Laser Jammer that can be integrated

I use a zip lock baggie over mine when it rains. It also covers the HARD transmitter. Go with Escort or Valentine or Uniden.

Been using my 10 year old BelRX65 Pro velcroed to the clutch reservoir since I bought the bike 4 years ago.
It started on the brake reservoir, but I changed it to the left (clutch) when I added the Rostra.
As this is my only radar det., it gets easily removed and placed in my car when I'm not riding.  Power is run from my fuzeblock, and up the left handlbar.  It sits well within the airstream of the screen, and I have never had  an issue with it staying securely fastened.

It's not the most modern radar or packed with wifi/bluetoothand other technologies, but I'm still not willing to pony-up $500+ for a newer model, when this one still works well.  I have sent it back to Bel for a gutting and updating, for about $125, and it was well worth the price.  Still works well!  I will EVENTUALLY upgrade, but doubt i'll stick a radar worth half a "g" out in the elements.  >:(

I CANNOT say enough for how well the Marc Parnes LED visual alert works!
I love that thing - and I love that it dims or brightens with the adjustment of the sound level on the radar unit.  Set on bright, this thing will BLIND you in the dark!  :-[
You can see from the picture that I mounted mine right over the gauge cluster in the line of sight as well.
The ONLY thing I can recommend on this device, is order a longer power cord for more mounting options, and ease of hiding the wire.

It IS baffling, why there aren't more waterproof Radar options out there, but like most guys say -- a ziplock or similar plastic bag with a rubber band works just fine.  I usually just put mine in my tank bag when the rain hits.

Kind of off subject but concerning rain I usually just take mine down in the rain and I also will remove it when I plan to be away from the bike for any length of time. It is to easy to snatch it off and be gone by thief.

I really only like the radar detectors for the local ambush LEOs when I am in a town I don't know very well or at all. Down the highway it is good to have but I am really not a habitual speeder to begin with. I generally just keep my speed up to stay clear of mindless drivers now days.

Uniden R3

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Uniden-R3-Extreme-Range-Radar-Laser-Detector-360-Degree-GPS-FACTORY-AUTHORIZED/222688596220?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

This unit has been getting RAVE reviews, I've been running one for the last 3 weeks and retired my Escort 8500 X50. Its a far superior unit and the X50 was no slouch...but the R3 does it all, its BSM filters and selectable frequency level sensitivity are great features to eliminate false alarms and its GPS enabled. Also, it's reasonably priced.

Yup the R3 blows all the others away in range and filtering. I asked Aaron at Legal Speeding if his HARD device works with the Uniden, but he never did get back to me.

Because all my bikes are wired for the Escorts and HARD device I'll stick with the new IX. I had the 8500x50, the 9500ix blew that one out of the water, I had the 9500ix for 7 years and now the new IX. Again much better detector overall and I like the Escort Live app when I cage long distances.

Might buy an R3 just for yucks though and try it in the cage and when trailering.
