Mutazu MD-100 Trunk installed
« on: June 14, 2013, 03:14:49 pm »
I installed the Matazu MD-100 Trunk last night (and into the wee hours of the morning).  First, this is my first post outside of the intro, so forgive me if I am repeating this or doing some new member typical forum error.

Anyway the box look good for $125 including the mounting hardware.  The bad news it the holes in the mounting plate does not match the holes in the rack.  I made two new holes (in the rack) about 8 1/2 inches apart to line up with the rack towards the seat and made the two rear holes in the plate a little wider  by making a second hole right next to the existing holes at the rear of the plate.

I attached the plate with screws that I had that are a little shorter than the ones provided with the box.  I could have Cut the screws if I did not have others.  I also used large washers in place of the lower mounting bracket provided because the brake light made it impossible to mount it. (plus it would be ugly).

Now that the plate is securely mounted to the rack I attached the box.  It was not as tight as I wanted.  It had some play in it (for $125 that's what you get)  I attached a home made "Shim with 3M tape to the plate that took care of that issue.

The trunk also came with a LED light.  Once I found the AUX power lead under the seat latch the hookup was easy, just plug it in and connect the ground.  I did not hook it up to the break light because I want to add a 12 volt outlet in the trunk to charge stuff when riding.  An easy splice in to the wire going to the lights inside the box.

I will try to add some photos when I take them and figure how to do it in the Forum.

I hope this is useful to others on the forum, as this forum has been useful to me.  Its great to be part of the group :beerchug:

The photos  larger than the forum will take.  How do I send photos?

This another try to upload a photo from Photo bucket.  If this works I will post more photos.  Sorry about the slow learning curve.

The box for the MD-100.  Not DM-100.  I could be a typo on the web page or another trunk.

Photos of the trunk and mounting plate (modified)

You can see the shim I made for a tighter fit.

This one shows the LED lights that are included.

Looks nice on the bike, definitely same trunk.  Must be a type error on their site.

Looks nice on the bike, definitely same trunk.  Must be a type error on their site.

I also think its an error on the site. Thanks, I think it looks good also.

Next thing for the trunk is to splice a quick disconnect to the wires going to the LED's inside the trunk.  I will be able to add different power outlets inside the trunk with ease.

Now the hard part will be not to overload it.  The Rack is only rated for about 22lbs.  And that includes the trunk and hardware.  hmm... about 10 lbs. Max plus about of 50 lbs. if the engineers under rated the rack.  lol

On that note, how heavy can a trunk be and still safe to ride?  (Before the front wheel starts to wobble or the rack falls off).  I always try to load the heaviest stuff as low as I can.  I want to use my trunk for helmets and riding gear when I get off the bike most of the time.  But I may pack it for longer rides.
