Original Grip Buddies goes Kawasaki C14!!!!!
« on: March 01, 2013, 10:19:40 pm »
This is the official announcement that after careful consideration I have decided to sell my 2011 R1200 RT Beemer with 3500 miles on it, and buy a brand new 2012 jet black C14! Many things I love about the RT, just that I need to be realistic that there are other really outstanding motorcycles like the C14, which allows me to have a little less invested in my motorcycle and more in my growing Motorcycle Comfort Grip business.

Not an easy process, but I am very happy with my decision. Also, I don't feel as if I am giving anything up. . . . . . .more like I am acquiring a really awesome motorcycle which I hope to enjoy for years to come.

Now  you guys can weigh in and tell me all about why I should have done this ages ago, etc. etc. etc. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Anyway, now I will officially be a Connie accessories enthusiast, so feel free to give me your thoughts and let me know everything  I should have known years ago, but never knew I needed to know, about farkling the C14.

Let the indoctrination process begin. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Best,

Dave R.

Enjoy your new Connie! :)  BTW, I installed my grip buddies today.  Hopefully this weather will warm up soon so I can test them out!

Talked to my lifelong buddy,Kenny, from Ithaca today. We have ridden lots of miles over the years, and I even bought a couple of my bikes from him back in the 80's when he was running a motorcycle dealership, and I was at college there.

We were laughing about all of the great rides and bikes we had shared over the years, and just generally catching up after not talking for 6 months or so. In talking about the fact that life seems to always come full circle, it came out that (unbeknown to me) he recently bought a C10 and is currently completely rebuilding it. This will mark the first time we have both owned the same make and similar model bikes at the same time. Really a great unintended consequence of my moving to the C14. almost seems like fate, or a larger hand at work. Now making plans to do dual Concours rides with him this summer.

Not going to look back or regret anything about this morph to Kawi. Just going to have a hell of a lot of fun.

Thought you guys would appreciate this little story (I'm sure you've got plenty of your own).

Best,

Dave R.

I'm pretty sure you won't regret it, too, Dave.

I came to a C14 from the other direction. When I joined COG I already had my ZX14 set up with hard side- and top-cases, GPS, heated grips, lowered pegs, ape-hangers (what the local sportbike club guys called them when they stopped by while I was building it). But it still was a 200+ HP motorcycle weighing 150 pounds less than a stock C14, so I did notice a slight reduction in performance and handling, you might say.

But no regrets. And I don't think you will either, because there is just something about a Connie......

I've had some pretty exotic bikes over 4 decades, but my C14 is the first one I ever just went out into the garage, pulled up a stool next to it, and stared at it like it was brand new.... a year after I got it and its still the same.

All the rest of them were motorcycles, but this one is a Concours 14. Even my BMW-snob-riding buddies are intimidated.  :rotflmao: :motonoises:

I remember I took a look at the Connie when I bought my last RT  in 2011. I had decided against the K12600GTL, as it didn't have enough Sport in its touring, and they had very few GT's available as demo's (9 in the entire USA). This time around I looked at everything in depth (especially the Connie). The K1600GT is a fabulous motorcycle, but still has enough beta test anomalies to warrant waiting awhile on it. In addition, it seems that it is very easy to "total" that bike right in your garage with a simple tip-over   >:(, because the thigh bone is connected to the leg bone is connected to the ear bone etc., and in a simple tip over you can easily do enough damage to warrant a $14,000 engine replacement, (and as we all know, it's mainly a question of when, not if, on this one). That got my attention real quick. Also, bike cost is a huge factor (my new Connie will be 1/2 the cost of a K1600!!)  :great: That got my attention too! I guess the purchase price of $26,000 on the K16 is just a downpayment, from what my Beemer friends tell me. Still . . . . . . . . . . . . . .a bike to consider  in the future.

Here's what I have found so far about my new Connie:  Fast, stable (actually has a true low COG)  flickable and wonderful in the twisties,  comfortable over long distances, well engineered and built with lots of high tech gadgetry, lots of dealers in lots of places, good value, wicked good looking, and in a class  of its own with regard to how the bike just "feels and drives".

Now you tell me: what's not to like?  :) So that's why I pulled the trigger and won't look back, except to check my rear view mirrors occasionally  :motonoises:,  and see the competition trying like heck to keep up :nananana::rotflmao: (only kidding!).

Feels great to be able to air my thoughts on this unavoidable lifelong passion I seem to have, and talk to others who may have gone through the the same "soul searching" to eventually find their sweet-spot "Model and Brand", also.  :beerchug:

Having owned and driven almost everything available out there over the last 49 years in many places in the world, I am just grateful that there are so many motorcycle options so all of us can find our "perfect saddle" and come to ground in a brand we like. Remember: reasonable people can disagree, and I will defend to the death the other guy's right to disagree with me. I'm just grateful that I ended up sitting on a Connie!

Peace!

Welcome to the dark side !

I love my 2012 black C14, other than how hard it is to keep clean.

Trying to get him to install a car tire? :sign0135:

Actually, my reference was to the fact he got the black paint version. The idea of a car tire is probably not a good one to bring up in Ad's thread.  :rotflmao:

I have a '12 C14 in garage waiting for spring.  Phil says an early one!  I like to run up to Corning to eat an Indian restaurant there that has a lunch buffet.  It is around 250 miles one way for me, maybe we could meet up for lunch when it warms.

WaltR-

Corning is about 225 miles or 4+ hours from here. Sounds like a great idea. Tell you what: you supply the food and I'll supply the grips for whomever shows up (limit 10 sets of grips-so I don't go bankrupt). Let's see if we can get a little mini Unrally going here. We can call it the 1st annual Spring Original Grip Buddies Unrally. I crack myself up!

Ok, your turn. . . . . . . . . . . .

With all due respect, sir, do not say that within earshot of the POD. He is very sensitive. Also, the more you persist in this, the more he will need expensive counseling. Do  you really want me to have to spend the money I am saving selling my R1200RT and buying the POD, on Psychiatry for the POD? Think of the waste man. Don't stop for me. Do it for the poor defenseless POD! ! !  Nuff Said. . . . . . . . .

Looks like the RT is finally sold. A guy from Virginia is flying up next weekend to pick it up. Just goes to show you what a huge part "perspective" plays in our lives. Couple guys on the BMW forums have suggested that once I sell the RT and pick up the POD, that I will morn for my RT. Almost as if I am selling out to the dark side. Frankly, I am looking forward to a new and exciting experience  on a bike I have never owned before. All of the bikes I have owned in my life have had something new and exciting to recommend them. Maybe the Connie will finally be the one. Only time will tell. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Picking up the POD on April 30th. Can't wait. Let the farkling begin. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
