Pirates Lair Stealth Backrest: As a trunk mount
« on: March 16, 2012, 01:04:05 am »
Anyone who has purchased a Stealth backrest from Pirates-Lair (http://pirateslair.net/ConcoursStealth.htm) knows it's a great looking comfortable backrest, but their rack sits too far forward to mount a trunk without crowding the passenger.

If you have a Stealth backrest or are thinking of purchasing one because you primarily want the backrest, you can now have the option, say for an occasional 2-up trip, of moving the Stealth rack to the rear and installing a trunk to carry her makup.

I have a conversion kit that lets you re-position the Stealth rack 2-1/4" to the rear giving enough room to comfortably mount a trunk. It will work with any trunk that uses a universal mounting plate. (Kawasaki, Shad, Coocase, Givi monoLOCK, Revlon, etc.)
My conversion kit ($60 delivered) comes with all necessary stainless steel hardware, plus 4 T-nuts that simplify attaching the mounting plate to the rack. The T-nuts allow easy adjustment of the mounting plate on the rack to suit your passenger.
Depending on the trunk size/position, the backrest 'may' still be usable with the trunk mounted.

Installation of the kit is easy, takes only a minute or two with a single Allen wrench and when the trunk isn't needed, everything converts back to the original Stealth backrest configuration. You can have it both ways.

Here's a few photos of the Pirates-Lair Stealth backrest, followed by photos of the conversion kit installed and a trunk mounted.

Excellent Phil, always thinking.  :D
I have the Stealth backrest, but use soft luggage on the rear.  If I were to opt for the hard top box, this would be a must have.
