Pre 2010 tank cubby box
« on: July 04, 2014, 01:30:41 pm »
I have a 2013. Has anyone fitted that cubby box they had on the pre2010s? Does it fit and where can I get one? Also seems that the righthand top fairing panel could accommodate something as there is loads of space underneath. Any ideas? Radio, Storage, Gun holster!

Pat,
On the 10 up models there is a relay harness that would need to be relocated in order to clear the center cubby. Probably not impossible to move. Under the right side is where a lot of the CC actuator housings get mounted. then there is no extra space under there.

If I remember right, I think several members have added the pre 2010 glove box to the 2010-2014 bikes.  I think that Fred Harmon actually did a write up on the mod. and there should be several posts from other people that have done the mod.  I would try a search.

I have the tank top storage box on my '09, I'm going to remove it and install the 2010+ cover in order to install pullback risers.
You need to not only get the tank top storage compartment but also the relax bracket, as someone as pointed out. And maybe some creative installation.

Pat,
I suggest you get a tank bag and save yourself a lot of money, time, and aggravation. Seriously the ""glove box "" is essentially useless. Does anyone else agree?

It's a sandwich warmer and a cell phone killer and screws up the use with a tank bag.

2008 here.....I can get my sunglasses, a credit card and a couple of allen keys in there. Cell will overheat in there. I do keep a little USB adapted for the 12v in there also. I agree on the tank bag. Would not mess with it.

Having come from 80k on an 08 to a 12 and used the top glove box all the time, I orderd all the glove box parts right away from powersportswarehouse.com for an 09. It came to a little less than $200 as they are about 40% less than retail. Took all the relays, wrapped them in rubber tape and laid them behind the left storage box behind the little wall. Had to take the pan of the top golve box and dremel out where the new brake lines are to make it fit flat, worked perfectly. Looks and works like stock!!!! 25k later and still smiling every time i use it.

Have a 2009 and find the tank box somewhat useful, for a tire gauge, micro-fiber rag, registration and license in a zip-lock baggy, and a Leatherman tool.  But, those things get really hot!   I don't put the iPhone in there!

Not to hijack Wyomingpat's thread, but has anyone fitted a 2010+ left inner cover to a 2009, to get the extra storage box?  Seems like there would be room there for the storage box, and the 2010+ inner cover might fit there.

At least in 2010, when KHI changed the tank dash cover to not have the cubby box, they put "prongs" on it for forward tank bag straps, making it easy peasy to put a strapped tank bag on.

On my ZX14 I had to reach down along the forks and find an upper fairing member to hook the straps too, so when I got the 2012 C14 I really liked the forethought put into the new tank cover.

I would buy the small Chase Harper over installing the box.  It is portable, will not overheat, and costs less.

Thanks guys for the excellent response - If it had just been a few screws it would be worth it but it sounds way more complex for little benefit.

Thanks again!

It's been done but it's a pain in the backside
You only need two tools in life – WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn’t move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn’t move and does, use the duct tape.

It is not that bad! Dremels are pretty cheap, did not think it was too complicated. I have the full areaP and the box and fairing does not get hot anymore. In fact, the fans hardly ever come on anymore, the whole bike is pretty cool running. When i had the stock exhaust, then it does get pretty warm in there, lots of heat!
