Title: Rear fender NOW GROUP BUY!!!
Post by: Grant on October 22, 2017, 02:42:05 pm
I am preparing to commute year around on my C14, being a brand new machine I would like to do everything I can to keep crap out of the nooks and crannies. I have looked at a few rear fender opinions however this one from Project D is the only one I found that isn't just an extension of the factory fender and doesn't add protection for the shock and back of the engine. http://projektd.com/product_info.php?products_id=123 (http://projektd.com/product_info.php?products_id=123)
This Fender from Project D looks like a fine piece, and does exactly what I was looking for but the price is ridiculous!!! Anyone know of a more cost-effective option to this fender??? I would like to use something like this fender in conjunction with one of the Factory Fender extenders for complete protection.

Oh I found Project D has one made of fiberglass with a more reasonable price but still a little spendy. http://projektd.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_58&products_id=124. (http://projektd.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_58&products_id=124.)
Murph you need to make one and put it together as a package deal with your front and rear fender extenders!!! If you do put me at the front of the line please!!!

I have the Projektd in fibreglass. It is really worth the money and when you see it, what's involved in making it and the mounting hardware, I think the price is not bad at all. With that I don't know that you would need a read fender extender. Don't really like the looks either. The front extender works great.

Thanks for your response. Does this fender keep the spray off the back of the bike and rider as well as out of the back of the swing arm?

Road spray and grit up the back of this bike is attrocious, if you ride on roads with dirt and in the rain...  I have to hose down my trunk box after a two day trip if raining just to get my trunk key to work...
 There is a large rear add on that works well tho...

http://forum.cog-online.org/industry-member-cog-offerings/concours-(c14)-fender-extenders-front-and-rear/msg102894/#msg102894 (http://forum.cog-online.org/industry-member-cog-offerings/concours-(c14)-fender-extenders-front-and-rear/msg102894/#msg102894)

Pretty affordable, and if you use some lternate mounting thought, you can make it easily removable for changing rear tire, by using small screws with nylok nuts to install it..
As for that huge "gap" at the front of the rear fender, a small "mudflap" can be easily fabricated from an old innertube, and pop riveted to the lower lip up there, it is inconspicuous, and will keep that rectifier box and associated are much cleaner...

I am using this project D from the UK. I think you can find it state-side for a little better price than that though.

When I installed it, I could NOT get the fender to install with equal clearance on each side. It was frustrating. I like %hit to be even.

I tightened things down per the instructions, not overly done.  The tire gets close to one side and its not perfectly straight, however, this fender has not budged or moved, or caused me any trouble since I installed it two years ago.  So far so good. Tire/wheel comes out without having to take fender off.

I ran through some fresh asphalt in Montana back in 2016 and it was nasty.  I just now several months ago got around to taking apart the lower fairing and getting all the gravel out of the fairing.

However this fender still did not prevent slinging all that oil up under the tail and I still got a dirty rear pack.   I never bothered to try to clean it off under the tail section.  I Figured it was pointless anyway and I would have caused another mess below it by trying to dissolve it with something.

I did get it though, for the same reason you want one, to keep the shock as clean as possible and avoid hits with rocks. I think the voltage regulator is under there too.

  So far so good though.  Nobody else makes one that I know of for the C14.

You will always get some dirt/grit on the bike but this stops most of it. No spray coming up that affects a rider or passenger that I have noticed. Mine is crooked too. I tried to straighten it when first installed but it wouldn't go. The nuts look really close to the tire but do not hit and no problems. Design I guess.

Well, Like I said, after a 6000 mile ride, I had a line of dirt on the back of my rear pack from the back tire.  I guess theres just too much being thrown off the back tire and the rear packs set back far enough that it still got it dirty.   The Project D fender is really not that long and still lets some spray go forward.

   But it didn't get it all over the shock and voltage regulator which was what I was hoping for.

Well I had broke down and started ordering the Projekt D fender till it came to shipping charges, Holly Crap!!! I think I'll be making my own. It was too expensive to start with and when shipping charges double the price I find an alternative...

OH Hell No!!  I have that setup on my bike  in Carbon Fiber and it looks really nice however- it does nothing but make a big huge mess in any  rain or even a wet road-
 It reminds me of Pig Pen on Charlie Brown.
My back and the seat behind me will be full of little bits of gravel and dirt.  Do not remove the existing rear fender unless you want to make things far worse.
I cant figure out why I have this cloud of mist and cr@p coming up in to my face from around the fork tubes but I know it started only after I installed the rear hugger

Yes!  That is what you want.  I like the look of the open wheel but functionally it really does suck. Just look at my picture.  No way does it help with anything other than looks. I do tend to run  grippy tires which will pick up and toss small rocks at anyone following me. Those tires you see in my picture are Pirelli Diablo SuperSport . Very very grippy even in rain but they wont last more than 2k miles..
Go with the fender extenders- those work.

 :great: :great:
I really like the looks of that part, and would be running one myself, but as I've installed a trailer hitch, I would have to modify things a bit to make it fit... which I really hate doing.

I know it will keep that roadspray in check tho...

I bought the extender on from Blueone but thought it was a little too big/long.  After seeing SiSF I cut mine down by about 1"=1 1/2".  Still give good coverage but doesn't look so big.
I'll try to post a picture later today.

I have the fiberglass inner fender hugger on my bike.
I agree, it does nothing at the rear for water sling, but it does help keep things cleaner up front. {Shock linkage etc}

I have the 55 series tire and it is "very" close, but does not touch.

When I bought mine, I contacted the US rep for Project D and he helped me set up a group buy for COG.
He was very helpful..

I'll try to dig up that information if your interested?

I reached out to ProjektD about a year and half ago to set up another group buy as a follow up to yours, but could only manage a 10% discount- I was even gonna have everything sent to me to redistribute by USPS to save more 'cause individual shipping is kinda ridiculous, but couldn't match your 20% discount, therefore the savings wasn't really substantial enough, so I never moved forward with it....But the US rep for ProjektD huh.....wanna reach out to him and try that group buy again? I know im im for a helmet lock and I've wondered if the AeroForm Luggage Rack-Backrest can be retrofitted to work with  my Laam/Phil's rack combo 'cause my kids and wife would love a back rest! but it's a bit steep at $199

I'll try to find out who I contacted back then.

As I recall, I had to promise X amount of buyers to get him to do the 20% on the fender.
And, I think it was a Christmas deal.

It's not a 20% off on everything. Only the item he agreed to.
To get 20% on the backrest we would have to do the same. {X amount of buyers}

Ted

Update: here was the previous Group Buy;

As I sed, we had to buy a minimum of 6 fenders...
At that time, the fenders cost us $144 plus $10 shipping...

Did you contact??

^^^ohh, didn't know it was one specific item that was 20% off. IDK who I reached out to now- it was really just sent to a general CONTACT there....aren't they in SE Asia someplace? Thailand?? and yeah, I recall something about X amount of orders/merchandise....perhaps it was even closer to 2 years ago now...details fuzzy...well, it's nearly getting to be that Holiday time of year again.....hint...hint, HINT  ;D

Maybe a new thread is warranted to gauge interest?

The same unit that Projektd sells is available direct from the manufacturer at https://www.pyramid-plastics.co.uk/accessory.html?accessoryCode=651 (https://www.pyramid-plastics.co.uk/accessory.html?accessoryCode=651)

There's also a comparable unit made with carbon fiber from Skidmarx.  Search 'Skidmarx GTR1400 hugger' on Google and it'll be the first result.

A little cheaper than Projekt-D but still $73 shipping. I find that to be ridiculous.

Ok, I called David. (I've been waiting to see if more express an interest in buying an Inner Fender}

David is no longer in the business of Motorcycle parts.
But he still has a connection in England and is willing to try to work something out for a group buy.
   {The biggest problem here is the shipping costs from England to USA}

He's currently checking prices to see what the cost would be to him.

If we can get 5 - 10 that want in on a group buy, he'll have them all sent to him as a batch (to save shipping costs) and offer them to us at the best price he can. {Plus shipping to your door}
I'll get that cost from him in a few days, and post it here..

So, the question is; Who wants an inner fender??
For now,,, Do not contact him.
  I'll co-ordinate the list from this site. (If we can get the 5-10 folks, I'll give everyone info on how/when to contact him).

The timing doesn't work for this buy, but since I frequently fly between the US and Germany if enough people (2 or more) want something I"m amenable to being used as a pack animal :D . But please don't ask for a complete motorcycle, just pieces. :) . I'll try to remember and post ahead of time for upcoming trips.

Pope/Staylo, thanks for replying. I'll post info here as I get it.
NOTE: During the last group buy (in 2014) list price for the fiberglass was $170 and the Carbon Fiber was $270. {plus shipping from Eu}    :-\

I think David was able to get the fiberglass for us at about $150. (total)
We'll see what he can do for us soon...

Yes, the stock fender/etc. stays on.
The hugger comes with all hardware to install onto the swingarm.
Not the easiest installation to get it straight, but do-able.

I just talked to David again. Told him we already had 5-6 that want in.
He said the manufacturer isn't helping him much. {as he no longer sells motorcycle parts}
But David agreed to try again, and see if he can talk them into a good price.

NOTE: He's going out of his way to try to help us. Good guy!

He offered a name of a company that also might have Huggers in the USA.
Said it was the Superbike Store in Anarbor Michigan. (sp??)

I have 10,000 miles on the bike now and the hugger has not budged or caused me any issues.  Rear tire comes off without taking it off, too.

Ok then how would you want it sized, I mean would it be the outside dimension or the inside dimension or just actual size??? I guess what I'm asking is would it be the mold or would you just build the mold from it?
I'm pretty sure I could provide a nice prototype out of steel, and then provide mounting brackets and Hardware most likely from stainless.
Title: Re: Rear fender NOW GROUP BUY!!!
Post by: Rev Ryder on December 07, 2017, 12:32:30 pm
Since the metal fender would be the proto or the plug, the outside of it would create the "finushed"'side of the mold.  Yes, I would pull the mold from your plug.  Since the Carbon and the steel wouldn't share dimensions except the outer surface that would be the surface to perfect for fit and appearance.  I would then do any clean up and prep and pull a mold from that. Since c.f. Is the desired final material, I would want to extend the part on all sides by at least an inch and a half as to create a mold with a good sized flange so that the part could be made by vacuum infusion. Its really the only good way for carbon to hand lay a part.  Now prepreg and an autoclav would be even better, but THAT I don't have.  Infusion yields very high percentage good parts so it is the best method for me.
Title: Re: Rear fender NOW GROUP BUY!!!
Post by: Rev Ryder on December 07, 2017, 12:37:17 pm
I think I would also want to finish the inside of the part with flexible coating to repel rock damage that could create spider or star cracks through the part. Then paint the outside with a couple of coats of a UV clear to make the resin hold up better/longer.

All, sam_uk has talked to Ian at Skidmarx.
Ian is willing to give us a discount, but we have a problem.
   below is what he offered.....

Individual shipping to USA would be approx £55 gbp {approx. $62} with the hugger at £94.95 gbp. {approx. $108}
    He is willing to  offer 10% off the hugger for ten units and 15% for 15 units

The problem is Skidmarx doesn't have a US representative.
 So,,,  shipping and handling the transactions is a problem..
     Not sure how we would pay for these with individual charge cards?
     Bulk shipping of all the fenders to 1 location and then re-distribute would save a huge amount on shipping costs..

ie; We need someone with Charge card handling capabilities.
     We need someone to receive all the fenders in bulk and re-ship to each of you.

Any idea's??

An idea.If someone is willing to ship them on and has paypal you could collect the 10 or 15 payments that way then make the 1 payment to Skidmarx .If they dont want the hassle of reshipping the buyer could arrange collection and delivery through a postal service. Just an idea. :great:

I'd buy 10 units and have them shipped here in Colorado. It's not that much ($1080 US -10% or less plus $300 shipping?).
Right?
Any idea of 10 unit shipping to CO? Bueller?...Bueller?... Anyone?
I would accept payment from committed COG members by money-order only but that implied warranty, damaged in shipping as one example is a mess so I'm not feeling that idea.

I'd buy one for $158 delivered if I could.

There are several US manufacturers who have 190-17" rear huggers in stock for other bikes. They are not inexpensive but they are cheaper shipping than buying one from the UK.
Has anyone ever modified an existing fender from another mfr?
Preston Petty Products has some nice plastic fenders.

Is this ZG inner hugger attached at two points only, left and right?
The two points being the aft end of the torque rods?

Hi Jim

The cost of shipping all of the products to this address would be £145($193.75 US)

A 10% discount on orders upto 14 and 15% discount on order over 15 items.

If I can help further please let me know.

Kind Regards
Ian

Based on this (10-14 units), $98.00 + $20.00 shipping, $118.00 per unit shipped here in the US, which is an appreciable discount over one unit!

I could probably be talked into doing that(heck, it would save me the second shipping cost). My only concern would be it would have to be a situation where I wasn’t at risk of getting stuck with a bunch of fenders. I assume everything would have been paid up front? Hopefully directly with the seller? There would have to be boxes bought for each one, in addition to the shipping cost. I don’t know if there’s any good way of estimating shipping cost without knowing what size box would need to be used. Weight should be a negligible factor. Thoughts?

Hadn’t thought of that. That would be really handy if they were. That would even allow us to get pretty accurate shipping estimates since the mfr could give us the box dimensions/weight.

If total costs is $118.00 to my door or less count me in please.

On this old note, ya'll forgot  that "someone" has to front the $$ for 15 units to Skidmarx {to get the fenders to the USA}.

Ya also forget the what it would cost the "volunteer' to handle everything after the fenders get to his house.
ie; cost of individual boxes and packing material, time to put the fenders in individual boxes, shipping them all over the country, and whatever the Credit card company charges the receiver for the use of everyone's credit card/PayPal..

I'm guessing the total will be closer to $150... {delivered to each person's home}

NOTE:
      I've handled several group purchases before.
      My first time; I did everything listed above, then tried to get folks to pay, send info etc. {some folks backed out}
      Was a PITA and I lost my shirt!!
      That's why, {since then} the only way I do a group purchase is to make arrangements, collect names, and have the mfg
        handle $$ collection, shipping, etc.
          In this case, it's not possible for this mfg to handle everything individually. {as Skidmarx is in Eu.}
      If Murph/other handle everything, we can't expect them to eat the expenses themselves.

         So, {IMPORTANT QUESTION}, If approx. $150 is the cost, who's still interested?

Ride safe, Ted

I am still in, I really want one of these. We should also check to see if Murph is interested in a combo deal, The hugger fender and his two fender extensions for total protection. Also see who maybe interested in such a deal.
I am still looking at the possibility of manufacturing a hugger fender for us here. I however would want to do a little better than breaking even and it's definitely a back-burner project as I have so many already.

I am curious as to how your going to use the hugger.  On my bike this same  hugger (In my case it is carbon fiber) was used to replace/remove the rear fender.
Are you guys keeping the rear fender and  adding the hugger so you will have both?  Just curious. I have never seen that done before so I wanted to ask.
Title: Re: Rear fender NOW GROUP BUY!!!
Post by: connie_rider on January 08, 2018, 07:29:26 pm
On my bike, I removed nothing, just bolted the Hugger onto the swingarm.
It fits tightly over the O.D. of the tire and works with the existing fender.
I'm almost certain it would also work if someone wanted to add the rear Fender Extender from Blue One.

MURPH is good people!

This is how I got my rear fender. I dont' recall who the vendor was, but it was a US based retailer. Maybe Ebay.  But I"m glad to see Murph stepping up and doing a bulk order.

For those that are on the "Still In" list, go here to buy your fender from Murph.

https://www.murphskits.com/ (https://www.murphskits.com/)

For those that weren't on the list,,, here's the new offering from Murph.
It's a C-14 rear inner fender...
COGggers asked for it, and he came thru.  {again}

Not sure what's happening?
When I click on the first one, I go to Murph's site.
When I click on the second one, I go directly to the fender.

Glad you got in on the deal, Cjilla...

Has anyone heard from Murph on these rear huggers? I placed my order on the 14th, never received an acknowledgment or response to three email requests (from his website) for an update. His phone recording directs to send him email. No luck.  I totally appreciate that these huggers are coming from the U.K. and may take awhile to get out but just curious if anyone has had any communication from him on these or received one?   Thanks, Al

Not yet. I had ordered the hugger and one other item at the same time, and the other item arrived today, but no fender. I just checked my account and it simply says processing.

I'm not sure they arrived his place yet.
He has not told me they arrived...
I'll check and let everyone know.

NOTE: He's hard to get hold of as he has a day job.
          But, I have my ways....  >:D

NOTE 2: There is a potential for a problem on those that ordered first.
             Murph was not aware the Fenders had been added to his system.
               I have him checking into that possibility already.
               Everyone that ordered, send me a PM and I'll cross the names with him too.

More later. Ride safe, Ted

 The huggers are still about two weeks out before I see them.

I did mine 3 years ago...
   Not overly difficult, but does take some patience as some of the clearances are tight..
   My memory sux, but I think I did it without removing the rear tire..

Note on fitting the hugger,Leave enough space for the odd small stone to roll under the hugger. over here UK we have stone chippings put down on the roads for grip,In the hot weather they can stick to the tyre and  chip the edge of the hugger as they try to roll under. Recheck the mounting bolts after a few miles , Painted mine matt black .easier to keep clean than the gloss black. :great:

I was thinking it would "hug" the tire more than it appears to.
Does appear there is plenty of clearance, though.

Nice Moondust Gray, I must add!

i have mine set lower than that but as long as there is enough clearance at the front it will be good (https://i.imgur.com/GlC2zvv.jpg)

I'm waiting for the truck to deliver my suspension so...I guess I'll mount mine whilst I wait

So...I added an extra M6 nut/washer to the rear brake hose clip bolt to back-up the M6 fiberlock (tighten nut until it pinches bracket)!
And it has some adjustment and it's actually very rigid
I like it a lot!

Check the clearance of the lower edge of the fender to the tire, it is likely to be really close with that much at the top. I noticed that as you adjust the clearance to tire the fender Teeter totters from the mounts, otherwise as clearance increases at one end it decreases at the other.

There seems to be adequate clearance all the way around... with the welded bracket (right) and the left bracket, there really isn't much adjustment to be had (or needed). In fact, upon closer inspection, the swingarm prevents much "rocking" of the hugger - it's snug against the swingarm so not more adjustment to be done - it just fits.

 So there was some sort of mixup on my order and it didn’t get shipped with the others, but I contacted them and they sent it out right away. The only question I have, for those guys that ordered one was there supposed to be some sort of brackets with this thing? All I have is the fender. I’m looking in the photos and I’m seeing metal brackets for attaching to the bike. I don’t have those if they were supposed to be included.

Yes it comes with all needed hardware. If you ordered from Murph's give them a call their customer service is excellent.

My Hugger is the Skidmarx. I rode the bike to Weymouth back in 2008 so they could measure my bike and take photos. I got a hefty discount when they delivered it and about the only complaint is the brackets could do with better quality powdercoating. I later organised a 21 units group purchase for the French GTR club GTRMANIA. Drove the car to Rouen in France with their Huggers and had a fun afternoon eating chatting and fitting Huggers. If you phone Skidmarx they will arrange a VAT free group buy shipped to the USA. Just remember we are on GMT/UTC here when you phone.

I dont remember having to do this for the hugger, but I do remember taking the pipe off for something......Maybe it was!

The good news is, the rear wheel comes off without having to remove the hugger.

I've had mine installed for several years and it's never moved, budged or needed adjustment or service.

That is what happened here a group buy through Murph's Kits and now we have a states side supply that saves a ton on shipping. I believe it was a win all around. BTW thanks for being the original model bike... :) :beerchug: :)

I have an Aww Sxxx to report.
I've had a hugger on my bike since 2014.
    Liked it and will get another.

I had 1 incident 3 years ago; I picked up a rock and it wedged between the fender and the tire.
   Wasn't a problem, just stopped and removed the rock. (But it slightly damaged the fender)

Now to the AS:
At the Sport Touring School in Jennings, my Hugger was torn from my bike while riding.
   I want everyone to know "it was a "pucker" moment"!!  :-\
   ie; I was in a turn after a fast straightaway..  :motonoises:

I recovered the fender and don't see where anything failed to cause the problem.
         The fender appears to have been torn from the bike.
   I think it was caused by the 55 series tire, high speed, and rubber build up on the tire from the track.

Ride safe, Ted

^^That "hugger" profile is the only drawback to this fender installation
