Scala Rider g9x is crap...do not buy!
« on: July 19, 2015, 02:14:28 pm »
I'm posting this to let people know what a piece of junk the scala rider g9x is.

I own 2 g9x's currently, both only months old.

scala 1 - totally dead. Had to get an rma and send for repair at my cost to scala. Havent heard a word from them.

scala 2 - totally dead. Was updating it and I think their software wiped the unit. Wont boot up, wont do anything. I guess I will have to pay more shipping fees to have them fix their crap product.

Stay away from scala junk! When I contacted customer service the first time, they had nothing to say. I think this happens alot.

My next purchase is Sena. When I get the scala headsets back from repair, they are going to be sold.

I am completely steamed about this.

I've had the G9's for a couple years & the units themselves have been perfect, I did have to replace both cradle's because the speakers died. I replaced with the upgraded G9X cradle's & have not had any problems. I also have an old set of G2's that still work perfectly. Maybe the G9X is not as good ?. I swear by my Scala riders & have been using them on everyride & that's about 50,000 miles in the last couple years  :beerchug:

I have had the Scala Q2 and G4.  And they are horrible.  Too much feedback, too hard to pair with friends etc etc.  My friend has the same thoughts and went to the Sena and is much happier.

I'm using the Sena SMH10 and it has generally performed well.   That said, I purchased their higher end product and was unable to update the firmware, and had to return it to Revzilla, who quickly refunded the money.  I went back to using the SMH10 but haven't tried to update the firmware, as the firmware updaters from Sena, apparently like Scala, suck big time, especially if your computer platform is Macintosh.  Both companies need to hire some competent Mac programmers to write the firmware update software.   As I don't use a PC, and have no intention of buying one just for updating these communicators, guess I'm staying with the SMH10 until it craps out.   After that, who knows?

still haven't heard anything about my unit sent for repair. It was sent by courier on july 10th.

Tried to call but nothing except voicemail, still need an rma for my second defective headset.

I guess we'll see how this one works out.  All I know is that i am "headsetless" until further notice.  >:(

got my first scala back, appears to be working correctly. They called me in response to my email to them on the second defective unit. Asked them what the problem was with the first, they had no clue. Just sent me a replacement unit.

So i'm 50 bucks lighter on shipping, and another 40 for the return of the second unit. Who would have thought that I would need to pay to have my units fixed under warranty when they are only months old. The first was purchased in january, so i didnt really start using it til the end of april, and the second was purchased june 6.

Tried to talk to the person that called me about covering my shipping cost, at least for the second one, but it fell on deaf ears.

I cannot recommend the scala g9x at all, and strongly recommend that others look at the Sena product if they want to invest in a communications system. Every person that i've spoken to about Sena has had a great experience.

Very happy with the Sena SMH-10R, you can pick up a PAIR from a seller on EBay for $255. I do wish I can play music while in intercom mode...maybe I can, but I haven't been able to figure it out? I seem to only be able to connect to another rider/passenger OR listen to music, not both at the same time. I love the small footprint tho and the sound quality with the built in speakers is respectable up to 70mph

I sent my Sena 20s in for around $8.00 and they sent me a new unit. They wanted the base and the unit itself. They sent a new unit in the box with all the stuff that comes with it , so I have two of everything,  speakers, mics power cables, and an extra charger. Sucked losing it for three weeks, but nice to have the extras for 8 bucks.  :great: and they actually fixed the problem!

Scala G9's for 4+ yrs. Never an issue. Just picked up the PacTalk and on the short trip up to NH last weekend with the Mrs loved them. No issues. Got caught in a monster thunder storm and tested their waterproofness.... Still working. LOL.

Gave my G9's to my son for his new bike. Still hold a 10 hr charge even after 4 years of use!

Friend of mine had a problem a few years ago with a Q2 unit, He was needing a replacement quick since he was going on a trip. They sent a new one out the next day & trusted him to send the old one. I've heard of good customer service with them. Guess everyone's not as lucky.

FWIW, here's my experience.

I bought a set of Scala Rider G9x units about a year ago. The primary one I use all the time. The secondary one has been used by a passenger one a couple different helmets a few dozen times. I haven't had any problems with either one, except the following occurrence:

About a week ago, I started listening to music from my ipod when I got on my bike. The music sounded incredibly distorted, so my initial thought was that I had blown the speakers or that it was the song. So, I changed songs and even tried a different playlist. Both of these had the same issues. So, I turned the unit off and then on again. After that it was fine.

The only other gripe I'd give is that when you share music with the passenger if anything interrupts the music playback (phone notification, etc) when the music resumes it doesn't automatically resume sharing. I can understand technically why this would be difficult to maintain. So the workaround I do is just reshare again.

Besides these couple minor issues I've been very happy with the purchase and overall quality.
