Top Box key?
« on: May 28, 2017, 02:02:11 pm »
I have the Kawasaki top box with my 2012.  Should the Emergency Ignition key that is in the spare FOB open the top box? Tried it and it does not appear to go into lock cylinder. Don't want to force it and break it or the lock.

I had a "small" deer encounter.  The top box survived ('cuz I did not have it with me!).  All I have left is the spare FOB as I had to hand over the primary FOB when the bike was hauled away. If the emergency key does not work - would my dealer be able to order me a key?  I see there is a 3 digit code on the lock cylinder.

Asking because I have found a replacement - another 2012 - but it does not come with a top box.

Thx for any answers.

My Kawasaki top case uses a separate key than the side cases and or IG. I added my top case after my purchase. Yours may have been done the same way and its keyed different?

My kaw box is a different key.

The lock opening on the box has a 3 digit number on it that corresponds with the KEY I have.

You can probably get a new key from your dealer.

Ok I'm a dumb a$$.   :-[

I looked again and you're right.  The top box does have separate keys.  All good.

Thx for the replies.

The Kawasaki accessory top case is actually a Givi Monolock case, not a Kawasaki product. You more than likely need a Givi lock key.

I just bought a new 2017 concours and bought the Kawasaki(GIVI) topcase with it. I bought the lock with it that allowed me to match the lock to the bike key. it was less than $40. and a nice convenience. :)

I keyed my givi E55 to match my bike key. I bought the one key system kit from the dealer and switched out some of the plates to make it work. Now one key for everything..... love it.

FYI the Kawi top box key accessory kit that allows you to key it the same as your bike key only works on 2014 or 2015 and up models.  It will not work on the earlier Kawi top boxes, they have different lock cylinders.  If you have a non Kawi branded GIVI box.... it may work but you will have to check.

Lost my top box key once - after $10 and 5 minutes at a locksmith I was good to go.

Do you have a part number handy? Just put on a Givi V47.

Is it one of these?

Kawasaki 99994-0499 type A
Kawasaki 99994-0528 type B

Any idea if this would work?  Bike is an 09 with a type A key. Case is a new V47.

The main concern is the key cylinder.  The picture shows the replacement and mine that came with my Kawi branded box on mu 2010.  The size is hard to see in the picture but the back where lock arm tab mounts it the easy part.  The silver (clean - un-lubed) one is the replacement and the dark one is what came with it.

If you go to the files section of the Kawasaki Concours 14 / 1400GTR Enthusiasts page on Facebook the compete instructions are listed under "onekey" sections 1 -3.

My bike only came with one key for the box and the plastic head broke before I even rode the bike in the spring.  Could get a few new plain keys cut but I went to a GIVI dealer and just got a new lock kit that came with 2 plastic head fancy keys for not much more.  Plastic head fancy keys are so much easier to find quickly on a key ring.... plain ones all look alike!  LOL

I'm going to try it.  The files you referenced from Facebook indicate it fits the V47.  My top case is fresh from Italy...It should work.  I know my 09 uses an "A" key so I went with the "A" kit.  Looks like I'll be in business in a couple of weeks. :beerchug:

If you lose or break the key you are out of luck Givi does not offer replacements !!!

I got two keys with the Monolock case and when I bought the new v47... it came with 2 keys.  Here's a thread with information about key blanks that will work and also the GIVI USA site where they supposedly offer replacement keys.  However, the point of this thread (I think) is to get one key that works all luggage and the bike.

Locksmith made copies of the keys that came with my new GIVI lock without problems.  If I can get GIVI keys in Canada you Shirley can get them in the US!

I did the one key mod as noted.... search for "one key" on this site and you'll find the thread I did it.

I bough my bike new in 2015 (2014 model) and also bought the Givi E55 Maxia from Givi not the Kawasaki case. I bought the one key system kit and used some of the wafers from the kit to re-key my givi lock.

One key for me, and life is good.

I ordered the Phill's Farkels so I can use my old Givi trunk. A hell of a lot cheaper than the Kawi dealers trunk and it's bigger than my first apartment.
2 keys? Sure. At least I have someplace for my emergency Fob.
