I also used the Garmin GPS app so I don't mount my GPS anymore. I use my phone for itunes and the GPS direction come through my earbuds with the music. I can still hear phone calls and stop to call back if needed as I am on call 24/7...

What Garmin GPS did you have?

Nobody has mentioned the cost of cellular tracking. Seems like it would be expensive if it's on every few minutes checking location.

What I mean is, how much data or cell time does it use? Does it check in every few minutes, hour? Anybody had to sell there first born after a trip?

No not much at all. Bad part is if you travel to Canada and no Canada plan it will cost you. I just turned my phone off in Canada. Data use a none issue.

I've used GPSed when hiking or mountain bike riding, sometimes even when I travel for work so the kids know where I am. It uses the GPS in the phone and can be accurate. But sometime when its lost, its really lost, which is more GPS than App.

I think it depends on the app and how often it passes the info back. Instamapper has a warning that says you need an unlimited data plan to use it and I think it drops a breadcrumb every few seconds. Other apps let you set the amount of time delay between breadcrumbs to a higher value, like once ever 10 minutes or so.

I spoke to SpotWalla support about my data inaccuracies using Google Lattitude, and I think they may have been caused due to the placement of my phone on the bike. I had it in the glovebox on the Wing which is right next to the meter display panel and ECM and I think it may not have been able to receive the GPS signal.  According to SpotWalla, if it can't pick up the GPS signal, it will then switch over to using the cell towers for location info, and in that case it can be quite inaccurate.

I ran it for about 8 hours on the bike and it drained the battery on the iphone down till it only had about 15% left on it, so yes you'll need to plug it in if you plan to run it all day long. I've also now loaded GPSed, and I'm going to give it a try as well. I'm not sure, but I think GPSed may be able to store (cache) data point locations when it is out of cell tower range and then upload them the next time you hit a cell tower, so it might work a little better than Google Latitude when you are in areas that don't have good cell coverage.

FYI, I sent an email to the support group at GPSed about caching the data points when in an area with no cell service, and this is the response I got from them.

Quote
Hello,

Thank you for contacting us.

After application failed to transfer collected positioning data two times, it will automatically switch to tracking to a file mode (offline). Crossed data transfer icon in the status bar means that positioning data failed to upload.

After tracking is finished you can upload the recorded file to the server via the Internet from GPSed application or upload it manually to GPSed web-service.

Please feel free to contact us if you need any further assistance.

Best regards,
Antonina

FYI,

I just had an email exchange with Jason Jonas of SpotWalla, and he is currently working on an Android app that will send info to his SpotWalla site that will hold data points in cache until the next time it is able to communicate with a cell tower. He said once he gets the Android app done, he will work on getting it ported over to the iphone. But he didn't give me any time frame for it. I suspect this is going to the best app out there for riders once he has it done.

I also wrote the folks at GPSed and suggested they hold the data in cache in them go back to live updating as soon as the phone can ping a tower again, but they told me that all development on their app has been halted and they don't know if or when it would be looked at again.
