Image hosting on Postimage.org
« on: November 08, 2012, 05:18:41 pm »
I found postimage.org today which is a free image hosting site for forums.  It sounds like something that it might be worth asking Colin to investigate.  It might eliminate the problem of members linking to photos on an image hosting site like Webshots and then having the site go away so all the images disappear from the posts.

Just curious what is preventing this or any other service from shutting down in time?   TANSTAFL -- Caveat Emptor -- YMMV

I just thought we might have better luck with a .org over a .com.

Won't matter in the least.  That's just a domain registration suffix and won't affect anyone's staying power with respect to capitalization and being able to generate enough revenue to keep the doors open.

Well it still could be a nice enhancement to the forum because it would eliminate the need for being a member of an image hosting website to post an image in a forum thread.  Besides I did not say we should do it.  I said we should investigate it.

Looks like a simple enough add-on for the website, but every time you incorporate additional code you introduce the chances for unpredictability, unreliability and there's always the potential to slow the site down.  Also as SMF upgrades, these sorts of add-ons can pose problems to keep that functionality unless the creator of the add-on also upgrades their code.

I agree that it looks like it could make adding pictures easier for the less technically inclined, but it's not without some potential fallout.

IIRC, the Aeva Media package is already integrated into this forum.

This is true,

There are essentially 2 ways to include an image in a post.
You can either add a link to an image that's on another online service like Webshots, PhotoBucket, Picasso or what ever.
Or you can use the + Attachments and other options, which is just below the window you edit in and actually upload the file to our server from your PC and go that route. Either work fine.
I'm not too keen to integrate even more clutter onto our already somewhat bloated platform  ???

I appreciate the suggestion though, perhaps we need better instructions?

Cheers
