Duplicate forum names
« on: February 03, 2013, 10:58:37 pm »
Is there any way of rejecting new members signing up with screen names that are already in use? This seems like a loophole that needs closing. Check out the number of Ed's for a good example. Just wondering.......

Forum names come directly from the Alias that a user entered in the My Profile section.  In the post below, Colin stated "Please make sure you set a good Alias. Please make it unique, as the system does not check."

This issue has been brought up to the membership service provider without resolution.

There is more to be gained by members raising hands saying "I'll do that" instead of pointing fingers saying "nobody's doing that."

All good, but apparently a lot of folks never read or do that.  What's the "membership service provider"?

Not to belabor this, but I would have thought it would be a function on Simple Machines vs Memberize. But then, I am clueless on software under the hood stuff. The "other" forum is on SM and seems to have duplicate rejection. Obviously, it's more complicated than I realize.

edit to add......must be because the Forum registration flows from Memberize, and Memberize will not create the dup rejection. Am I close?

As we like to say up here in the North-East... You're wicked close....  :D
So close that if you were any closer we'd have to assign you the tank of IT Director (which as far as I know is still an available position  :-\ )
<--- is there any mechanism in place to deal with a non- productive, antagonistic, former non- member such as this?

FWIE - The IT Director position will not be vacated until end of 2013 and I think a replacement has identified.

Wow... a new member is expected to go through thousands of username to see if his has already been taken? When the server could do this in less than a second? We should all just throw away the machines and carve our messages on a piece of bark and float them down river hoping the get to the right place.
Smart people look like crazy people to stupid people.

If Memberized will not make the change, even though I think they should. can we have simple machines run the check the first time they log into the forum and them direct them back to cogmos to try again?

This is a bit ridicules.  There are tons of duplicates.  How can the other users of memberize be happy with that either.

According to the list there is only one ZG so no need to demean yourself.   ::)
