emporium issue?
« on: July 16, 2015, 02:44:39 am »
Any word on when the emporium problem will be fixed so that folks don't have to post multiple times because they think it doesn't work? It times out and gives some error message when you post a new thread, it actually does post, but because the error message folks keep reposting...

Maybe at the same time the name could be changed to "for sale" or "classifieds" or something that folks new to this site actually know what that section is?

What the heck does emporium even mean?? I've never even heard of that word except for this forum? Is it French?

 ???

BAD A$$ isn't cheap, and cheap isn't BAD A$$...

Jay,
An "Emporium" is a place to find/buy a menagerie of things.  It was the preferred, more genteel term for a "bazaar" type marketplace or shop before the crude "flea market" became so popular. It's roots reach back to the Reformations of Europe and John Calvin's Geneva.

If you need help with menagerie, let me know.    ;)

As far as the double (and triple) postings go.  I'm not so sure WHERE the real fault lies.  Most folks who have reported having it happen to them have admitted to hitting the button more than once because it didn't appear that the first time did anything (slow).  Now why the software would allow a multiple post in short time is beyond me.  Have you asked the Doer of Things about this?  If there is an actual software issue, he'd be the guy.

There is your problem right there. We have an online presence let's use current language and look forward not reach back.  :great:

It's definitely a system problem RR. Every time you create a new thread in that section it sits n spins for about 30 seconds and then gives you the screen below... Hence why folks then try again, because they think it didn't work.

What's odd though is it does post, see the one I just created for you in the C14 "for sale" section, but folks think it didn't because of the screen below and repost...

Ok. So you  PM-ed Admin about it?  To my knowledge, he's the only one that can correct it. But I do believe he's aware. I can't say for sure. I apologize for it being like it is, but I have no ability to correct it.  I will let him know though.

EDIT TO ADD:
Sorry ZG, I just snapping to where you posted this. While I have sent Mike a PM, you put this in the best place.  :-[

Gummy et al,  EDIT TO CORRECT SPELL CHECKER... GUMBY
Since I am past the age of the typical fifth grader that might show up here looking for farkles (now antiquated term) for their C-14, any words that I can think of to "re-label" The Emporium will likely fly past without encouraging.   What might you suggest?  Is it really necessary to "dumb it down" to "for sale" (Which predates Emporium 300'years BTW) or to restructure it into a "classifieds" section  (which it really isn't in its current form with only three classes)?

I thought of Part Mart, but it's much more than parts. Mall is also an old term as are supermarket, market, store, depot, closet, place, hanger, rack, and anything else I can come up with.  I personally don't care what we call the place as long as it functions to a minimal standard, and I cannot change the name any more than you can, but input or suggestions would be a good way of starting the conversation.

My suggestion? I'd keep it as is.  Your turn.

My vote would be to just call it what it is and what folks look for... "FOR SALE SECTION".

I've seen many newbies post things in odd places and say, "not sure where to post this as it doesn't look like there is a specific for sale section on this forum..."

There are a lot of sections and sub-categories on this forum, let's make the FOR SALE section obvious is all I'm saying...  ???   :beerchug:

I agree with loud mouth here on this one, FOR SALE. I like to Keep It Simple.

With that said, I really don't care either way especially if it is to much trouble to change it. If people can't figure out emporium I'm going to suggest that they should not be riding a motorcycle on the streets.

If we want to be the most modern we should change "Emporium" to "Zogolo" which will be current when we're on our 5th space station in orbit around Epsilon Eridani.

Also to do things the union way, when  part is posted for sale it should have afixed closing, say, a month after the post.  By then all members who want the part at that price will have posted their desire to buy the part.  In fairness, the member with the lowest COG number will get the part.  If no members want the part after a month, the seller can reduce the price and re-post the part for closing in another month.  Forum subscribers can buy parts after some designated milestone is reached, for example, when heck freezes over.

 >:D
Or, the Emporium could be left as-is.

It is very easy to change, a few clicks and type in the new name. But no, it's not going to be changed.

Personally, "Emporium"seems logical and a bit classier than "For Sale".
For what it's worth, If we really felt a need to change with the times, my suggestion would be "COGslist", though that might lead to legal issues.
