Not being able to search without logging in is probably the least of the reasons the others have for not becoming a paid member or remaining a forum user.

Only speaking for myself, Steve, and based strictly on my experiences...  how welcoming a forum is (or web site), is extremely important to me (although I suspect many other people would agree).

Off the top of my head, I can think of three instances where a forum owner's policies put me off having anything to do with that forum. Two were privately owned , the third was like COG - the forum was an adjunct to the clubs web presence. The first two forums required registration to search, the last required registration just to read. If the idea is to entice people to learn about you and consider joining, well, that's the wrong way to do it. I will not register for a forum - or web site - only to find out it is not useful or worse, mainly out of privacy concerns. How do I know a forum owner isn't selling his registration list to advertisers?

The forum that I visit related to my truck is the opposite side of this coin. Privately owned, allows visitor searches. I signed up almost immediately after doing a couple of searches as a visitor and realizing just how sharp these guys were. Would I have registered if I couldn't search as a visitor? Yeah, probably, but it would have taken longer for me to realize that the site was worth it just by reading posts until something was brought up I could relate to, or scrolling through page after page looking at subject lines.

Are my experiences typical of others? Who knows, but why turn off a feature that has never been a problem and one that some users appreciate having?

Jim -  I too have visited forums for other things that allow full search/read guest access, and taking a test ride can provide the feedback needed to know if it is a fit or not. I appreciated having this option and totally understand your viewpoint. Some forums allow search/read of a subset of content, and require registration to get to the entire content. Many of those "free to use" forums also display advertising to users to generate revenue to pay the bills to keep the forum running. More page views, more revenue. It make sense for a wide open format.  Here we find the complete opposite.  No ads, no use fees, no restrictions.

While you strongly desire the openness the club has always tried to promote, there have been other club members strongly complain about it.  There will always be a small number of outliers in a normal distribution.  Even in this thread the opinions are from a very small set of members. It would useful to hear opinions from a wider distribution of members.

There is more to be gained by members raising hands saying "I'll do that" instead of pointing fingers saying "nobody's doing that."

I'm with Jim P on this. Why would the club want to purposefully not be welcoming to new people? One good reason, anybody?

I'm also one to not register to do a search on a new to me forum.

Just to give you one reason.  Spammers COULD use bots to search our forums to find targets.  Depending on what they are after, that could make YOU the target just because of something you said in a post 5 years ago.  What are they targeting you would ask.  What ever they want.
