How do I subscribe to a forum thread?

I didn't receive an email on a thread where I had previously posted and someone else replied. How do I make this happen? 

And how can I subscribe to a thread in which I have an interest but don't see a need to put in my 2 cents? Sometimes called lurking.

I got stuck on the word subscribe.

The 'Notify' button under every thread only subscribes you to that thread, whether or not you have posted in that thread. The one you found in your profile settings can be set to send you an e-mail of notification of replies to every post or reply you make. There is also a notify button at the top of each board, that will notify you of activity in that board.
