Is it "Bad Karma" to lock out "Karma"
« on: January 05, 2011, 06:33:40 am »
I mean I grew up with 18 years of Catholicism and all the trappings of weird religion. (oh yes the catholics and for that matter, all others are freaking weird)  but I really am beginning to wonder if it isn't bad karma to lock out the thread on karma?  Whaddda think?

(241 more to go!  hehehehehehehehehehehehehehe!)

I deleted my post, because this subject seems to want to only create more unnessasary controversy.

As a newcomer to this forum, I have to say this...

I sure hope there was a bunch of back-story to that lock out, because if that's all it takes to lock out a forum, I'm probably not gonna fit in too well around here.  I tend to think that confrontational discourse is healthy.

I agree, there was no reason to lock the other thread.  But, back on the topic of this thread:

Quote
Is it "Bad Karma" to lock out  "Karma"

No, but it is very bad karma for moderators to continue a pointless argument in a locked thread, and even worse karma for them to carry the petty bickering into another thread.

If you can't keep yourself civil in every situation, please reconsider whether or not you have the temperament required to be a moderator.

I have asked the Mod's concerned to self-moderate their posts and to move their discussion either offline or to the Mods and admins section of the Forum.

Its healthy for mods to have active discussions on subjects they feel strongly about, however I feel its wise for any discussion to be had in an appropriate place.

Please give them a bit of breathing space to clean up thier posts.

Thanks

I locked the topic because it seems clear where everyones opinons are on the subject and to continue seems pointless. I'm going to move the topic to mods and admins because I think this horse has been beaten enough.

I started this  thread because I felt we are being too sensitive and not allowing even a modicum of discourse

Nope.  Not much back story.  Just an idea most don't think serves a useful or helpful purpose in a healthy discourse.

To confront is to challenge to fight.  How's that healthy?  A challenge to consider another view point or opinion is healthy but to confront?  How is engaging in a pissing contest healthy?

Googled - to meet someone face to face with hostile or argumentative intent.  Had enough of that as a kid.

After reviewing the original thread, by my count, of the 14 original posters only 2 people were against the karma feature, I still think we can use it if we rename the smite/applause titles, suggestions?

To rename it doesn't change anything.  If we are to have something like this there needs to be some accountability for its use.  We need to know why it is being applied and by whom.
Well...even if you fall on your face you're still moving forward.

After looking it over we can change the name of it to something like "Kudos" or how about like/dislike like Facebook uses. Maybe we could use "that a boy"/ "whoa big fella". I think we need to set it back on and see how it goes. Short of the people in that thread I don't think the general users have even used it much or at all. Lets let the users decide its value and use.

Not to try to stir up controversy. But I thought we were going to stop the whole discussion on this function because of different opinions?

It now looks to me like we can't have any discussion on whether or not to have the function. But it now seems to be perfectly OK to have what seems like a how will it be when we turn it back on discussion? With all do respect, It seems like this subject is only allowed to be discussed one sided!  Why is that?   :o

So after reading this thread this morning, I decided rather than just start up the discussion again, I felt it easier to just have a poll. I started it in another section to keep it away from this thread. If people can just vote on how they feel and try not have politics in the actual poll. Maybe we can really get an idea what the people really want or not want!   ;)

I looked at the poll Bob, but I didn't vote. I don't think it's as cut and dry as you put it. I've been involved with software enough to know that most of the time it's not as simple as turn the function on and let the users have fun with it.

I guess my official vote/opinion comes down to this. If it is a question of on or off, in the same form as it was previously, I'd say No. But if it could be used in a way that included a mandatory comment, I'd call it a useful tool. OR.... if a comment was not possible,  turn it into something obviously comical. For an example, Free rider or Safety Nazi. I've personall called enough of the people I like and respect a Safety Nazi, I'm pretty sure they know it's just playfull ribbing.

Just my 2 cents  :D

<--- is there any mechanism in place to deal with a non- productive, antagonistic, former non- member such as this?

I think we should have a discussion about having a poll on whether or not we should have a discussion about the use or none use of discussions in deciding if we should be using karma or not.
Winter, got to love it.
As the one that started the original question about using karma... I withdraw the question :)

There is no option for commenting... at least in the stock form, I think it would be a major project to code such a thing.  There is however the option to change the labels, for example on a game forum I used power up and power down.  But everyone there knows it's just a little fun, a joke more or less and everyone plusses one certain person because when I first turned it on he made a big point of saying how he didn't care about it.  But I think here people are taking it too seriously, so leave it off.  There is the option to turn on only the plusses, maybe that would work.  Change the label to 'Thank You' or brownie points or kudos or something like that.
