Notifications
« on: May 22, 2012, 10:53:11 pm »
I am not receiving notifications for all the replies to threads I have requested them for.  Sometimes I will get a notification and other times I will find that there was a reply to a thread a day or two ago but I never received any notification.  Sometimes there may be multiple replies to the thread over a period of a couple of days but I only get a notification for the most very recent reply.

My profile is set:
For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me:  Instantly.
For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me of:  Replies and moderation.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

You should get a notification for the first reply, then not get another until you check the thread.

I did not receive a notification that you had replied to this thread! :(  I had to look in the forum for this thread to find out that there had been a reply.

maybe having 109 enabled notifications is too many?   :D

There could also be a delay as the server ques up and spreads out outgoing e-mails over time, to prevent overloading. If this is the case, 'Instantly' means the software (the forum) sends the request to the server to send out the notification immediately, but has no control or knowledge of what the server does with those requests.

I visit nearly every day, and my bookmark goes directly to the new replies page. So I have turned notifications off.

What... don't tell me you have a life, and don't have time to be here every day!!!  :))

I didn't get notification of two new PMs the other day also BUT the sender got the server error message each time he sent so maybe that is the difference.   If they get that error on send thread or PM we get no notification.

109, really?

That's what I do too, except my bookmark shows all unread posts.  At the moment I have 14 pages ans still growing... sigh

Has there been a change to notifications from the forum?

I seem to be getting all my notifications now but the text of the reply is no longer a part of the notification.  I initially noticed my notifications lacked any text when all that had been posted was an image or emoticon.  But now I'm getting no text and the poster has sometimes written a couple of paragraphs.  Looking back at my past notifications, this seems to have started at 1700 EDT yesterday, June 26th.

Maybe this: http://forum.cog-online.org/index.php/topic,35854.msg193019.html#new

It basically says this:

Folks;

I have just turned off the inclusion of the text in a PM notification email.

Many folks were responding to the PM notification email which resulted in me receiving the email.  ::)
Which does them no good, nor me as then I feel obliged to reply:-
"Hey you can't reply to a PM Notification email."

Basically if someone PM's you rather than email you, you have to PM them back!

Cheers

Colin

Unfortunately, it seems Colin turned off the inclusion of the text in all notifications and not just the PM notifications.  ???

People were getting the notification, and attempting to send a reply to the notification. Without the text it is more obvious you need to visit the forum first.

 :iagree:

Although I suppose Colin can arrange it to change the notification "Reply-To" email to that of COG-528 and turn on the text back on.

I can certainly understand why Colin made the change and might want to leave it exactly the way it is.  But for those of us who are monitoring the forum while at work ::), having the text in the notification saves us the time of having to go on the forum every time we get a notification to see if there is anything we want to reply to.  Of course Vicki says I shouldn't be on the forum during the day while at work in any case.  :-[

I'm one of those who find it extremely frustrating to get notified that something changed or was added...and have no clue what it is...which requires I log into the forum to find out.

If it can't be changed back to be like every other forum that gives you the text of the new message or reply, I think I'll just turn off notifications.  If I think of checking for new posts, I guess I'll find out what has happened.  If I don't remember...well, you probably won't hear from me...and life will go on for each of us.

Never mind.  I looked and the last person to reply besides me was in 2012.  I turned off the notifications and I'll get a weekly email now that I may, or may not, see.

after you change the notifications, go back to the main forum, and completely log off, and log back on.. that should fix it all... as to the response to a 2012 thread... I can't help there... :rotflmao:
