The Spirit of COG
« on: June 21, 2018, 12:30:37 am »
So, I'll say first that I have been a COG member since 2016 and have been attending COG functions since 2014. I am not an active member here, but I do participate some on the Facebook page. After this year's national rally I feel compelled to write this here.

I inherited the bike known as the Spirit of COG at the 2016 Helen GA national rally. I learned the history of the bike there from several members who were involved, most notably Chris Lillie (the original winner) and Jim Miller (the builder). What really stood out to me was how many members, who are also industry partners, donated time and parts to the bike to make it truly a great build.

Unfortunately in the time the bike has been with me I have done little more than oil changes to keep the bike maintained. The paint is faded, the rings are losing compression, and the carbs need to be gone through. In short I have simply ridden it and just enjoyed my time on it. I think that came back to bite me in the long run at this year's national rally in Kerrville. After trailering (yes, yes, i know) the bike to the rally I got two good days out of riding it. On the second day upon returing to the hotel I noticed the bike leaking something profusely from the front of the belly pan. After the bike cooled down and the plastics came off we discovered that the bike had lost roughly 2 quarts of oil out of the bevel gear gasket. The leak was pretty bad and without writing an entire essay on the subject, the bike was down and out for the rally.

Luckily there were several folks present to assist in diagnosing the problem and keep me from redneck fixing it and doing more damage. One person of significant note is Ted Adcock. Ted took time out of another rally function he was supposed to make an appearance at to help me diagnose my issue. When I finally determined that I wouldn't be riding the bike Ted pretty quickly convinced me to take his keys for his spare C10. He brought the bike specifically as a backup for the OTP riders. I dont remember how many times I politely refused, but eventially Ted convinced me that I came to Texas from NC to ride, and I needed to take the opportunity and just ride.  So I took his keys and planned out my next two days. I can definitely say I am extremely grateful for Ted's generosity, we saved the 3 sisters ride for Thursday and it did not disappoint. I would have hated to just be sitting around the pool and miss that ride!

In the end I guess my main point to this post is that the true "spirit" of COG doesn't lie in a single motorcycle. The spirit of this group lies in the members that go above and beyond for their fellow riders. So if I didn't say it enough in Texas, Ted, once again THANK YOU!

Well said Matt. Ted's a good man and has a big heart. I found that a common trait among the Texans I encountered wherever I went last week.

I (sorta) disagree. That's a common trait among COGgers from every state.

Well written, Matt.  It was nice to chat with you on the porch.  I hope your repair/upgrade plans go well.  +1 on Ted Adcock.

Cheers,
