Will not display images sourced from ftp servers
« on: October 18, 2010, 02:00:18 am »
If you use bb code like this :

ftp url here you get a link in the post which works but no image is displayed.

If you use bb code like this :

it will not display the image.

Every other board I use and our "old" forum also would properly display the image.

You need to use the insert image tab on the reply menu or use { } without the { } brackets, it should work then.

I cannot get it to work with the insert image button, as it munges up the ftp url and won't display it. Go ahead and do one that is sourced on an ftp server and show me how. :)

I am not sure about all this since I have not used FTP in years.  The insert button should work fine if the link you are trying to use opens with no problem when pasted into a web browsers address window.    Can you send a working link and I bet one of us can figure it out?

You are correct.  It shows when pasted in a browser but not if you insert it as an image.  It also does not work on ZG/GTR forum so...

Colin??? got a clue what it could be.  I am betting permissions or over size limit or something simple.

I would assume this has something to do with the fact that ftp requires annonymous login info which may be difficult when displaying a picture.

ftp://ftp.pball.com/zx14summer100001_3.jpg

No, it's because the img tag looks at the url, doesn't see http:// and assumes the poster left it off. Being a most helpful sort, it then adds http:// to the front of whatever the poster put inside it.  Ftp doesn't know about images, so the ftp tag treats any link you put in the ftp tag as a link.

If the html bbc tag were enabled you could do this:

Code: [Select]
[html]<img src="ftp://ftp.pball.com/zx14summer100001_3.jpg" />[/html]

Yes, I would do it manually if it was enabled. But the idea is to make it easy for users of the board to post useful messages, images being a big part of that. Ever see a post ... "this needs pictures to be useful" ? Heh.

I am sure the admin can change the forum software to implement proper handling of ftp-sourced image files for inline display.

That is my ftp server by the way, pball.com belongs to me. Mail server, name server, ftp server, web server (blocked atm until I get Dreamweaver installed and make a home page). Been admin and tech contact for pball.com for decades.

It even had a UUCP connection once via a Trailblazer modem, which was rocket science back in the day.

Agree pictures make a post better.
If YOU are the only one that uses FTP?  If use of FTP stored images is less SAFE for the target software.  If these things are true then I can see us not supporting it but I have no clue if you are the only one and if it is safe as linking to other web hosting sites.  I am just saying sometimes things just can not happen.  I have no clue if this is one of those times.  I think the fact that other forums of the same type do not allow it may be a clue though.

John - I'm sure you've already done the same, but I could not find anything int he SMF online help that supports image display from a ftp link.

From what I see the html feature is an admin only feature - probably for good reason. The admins need to determine the ramification of enabling this for all users. Seems more logical to all to use the supported basic BBCodes {url]} {img} etc.

My suggestion is to create a shared directory on your server that is also addressable via a http URL.  Colin - what is your thought?

Not sure how to do that. The image is in the ftp server's "home" (aka pub) directory which is set for "anonymous" users to be able to READ and LIST. It works on all the other forums I frequent.

Used to work on ZX14ninjaforum but they replaced it with an upload option, so they now host the image on their own web server machine.

There is an easier way to work around this/

If you click on the Additional options (see below the window when you post) there you can attach and image to the post by uploading the image to our server. Note there is a size limitation.
That way COG hosts the image.
That's not a method I like to overly publicize as I prefer to keep the database size down.

Hope that works for you Privateer. :)

Place your images in the public side of your web server space somewhere...   i.e.  somewhere in the c "www" folder or the like... the same place  where the index.htm file would be.
