10' Windscreen issue / warranty (updated)
« on: July 21, 2012, 08:01:57 pm »
Dropped of my 2010 today to the dealer with a windscreen problem. I noticed a lot of movement the other day abd it looks like something is broken on the left hand arm. On initial glance something is worn or broken. They have it for 2 weeks since I'm traveling and I'll report back.

No, the other forum pointed out my error in abbreviaton as well. I have a Stock windscreen on my 2010 bike. I have had a CB on it in the past but have been riding with the stocker for the last 18months.

When I was riding BMW's the RT's had a habit of breaking the windshield arms.  If I remember correctly most were due to large windshields being run all the way up at high speeds.  So far no problems with my V-Stream but then I never run shields in the full up position on this bike either.

There have been a few folks with windshield mechanism failures on here. IIRC, I think the manual tells you not to adjust the windshields height up and down when riding. (something to that effect)  Probably because of excess forces when the shield is moving under heavier wind loading while the bike is moving.

Spoke to the dealer and he's ordered the part to fix it under warranty. He said the casting was cracked, how that happened we have no idea. Apparantly the whole assembly is one part so it can't be fixed only replaced. He also said there have been three revisions of the part and he doesn't know if that means they've had problems with it.

Oh and he's going to do the rear break recall while he has it as well, just needs to confirm and order parts.

Picked up the bike today. They replaced the entire windscreen mechanism under warranty, its a $600 part. The left black arm which the winds bolts to was cracked at its base, its was a very clean break.

They asked if I'd dropped the bike, which I have, but the windscreen was never touch.

They did say the part has been revised 3 times, but no previous reports of it cracking.....so who knows.

Otherwise, the bike has been rock solid.
