Title: 100
Post by: Steve in Sunny Fla on February 18, 2016, 06:41:20 pm
I've flashed 100 ECU's as of today. Thanks everyone for all the support in getting this going!  I hope everyone feels they got their money's worth, and I especially want to thank the early testers who kicked me into developing the decel flash.  :beerchug: :beerchug: :)  Steve

Sounds like it's just EZ money but I can't imagine all the hour after hour of work, trying, measuring, riding...well OK, riding is not really work but it is a part of this.  My guess is that he might approach minimum wage eventually.  I'm planning on getting one also after having said to myself that I'd never get an ECU flash.  The problem is that most of them seem to be focused on performance where Steve's is focused on ride-ability.

Congrats on the milestone!

Yes, there's some perspective here.  There are some who only see the time I actually spend installing the files into the ECU as what I'm being paid for. If that was the case, this would be astronomical money, truly. But here's the facts... I bought an 09 a couple years ago expressly to learn the bike, took it apart, put it together, built a header, played with flies, pcv, etc. sold it and bought my 12. Then I bought all the equipment I needed to start flashing, and had to figure that out. Fortunately I came at it with decades of tuning knowledge, so that part was already earned. Now to date, I have flashed my bike 73 times. that means 73 different tunes. Each one requires riding, evaluating, and making changes for the next improvement. 73 times. I've paid for dyno time, I bought a kds unit to further my access and understanding of the bike's electronics. I also came at this with the mind of a sport - tourer, not a drag racer, so I know my target audience. Plus folks might be surprised to learn that I have a hefty price to pay for each ECU I flash, as I have to pay for the access to each one. So all of what I charge isn't going into my pocket, it's just like any other product, there's expenses.

Now all that said, I knew all this going in. I'm 56 years old. I've been building engines and working on vehicles since my teen years. I'm tired of being greasy. My mind has a much better chance and providing for me financially than my body does. I made the conscious decision to develop products. Products that are so well developed that it makes someone wanting to compete with me really have to question what would be in it for them.  This was something I learned about 25 years ago when I developed and patented an archery bowsight. The fact is that you can spend a bunch of money getting a patent, and then a bunch of money to enforce it, or you can develop a state of the art product, sell it for less than competitors, and own the market with volume. This is EXACTLY what I'm doing with the flash. The upside is that everyone who gets it has the most well developed c-14 tune there is (and probably will be) and they're getting it for less than previous flashes sold for.  I make money on volume. Win / Win.  :great: :great:

There will always be detractors. Little men with little minds, jealous that someone else did the work while they sat in their rented  basement and lamented how unfair life has been to them. Or those who wish to detract by making blatantly false statements about my product, and hoping to confuse some folks who are on the fence about messing with their bike at all. This type of guy really tries to rely on the fact that a "regular guy like Steve" couldn't possibly be able to do what I claim to have done, that it would take great minds and millions of dollars in equipment to have done what I claimed to have done. Well, I'm not that, I'm not a mystery man, I'm not some far away company that has no roots in the COG community. I am one of us. I came to COG as a regular guy, looking to upgrade his c-10. I'm still that same guy, but upgrading my c-14. Other Cogger's like what I do, and support it. I'm the same guy at rallies and events. Look me in the eyes, ask me questions about what I do, and hold me to the answers I give. That's it. I'm one of us.  I am just fortunately equipped with the background to do stuff we all like, and except for those little men, I know everyone else is out there cheering me on, which I'm eternally grateful for. ;) ;) Steve

Great news, Steve!
I can't wait to finish my break-in miles so I can be in the next hundred happy customers.

Rick
By the way, are you going to be flashing in Helen?  :-\ :-\

I will be flashing at Helen. I will also be giving away a flash, or 2, or maybe 3. But it's going to be a bit different than one might expect.

When I decided to donate a flash at the national and also flash at the national, I was confronted by what I'd learned from years with the c-10 guys:
   1) when you donate a prize, often a guy who doesn't want it wins it, but won't give it to a friend who does want it. No winners there.
   2) if I say I'm flashing AND giving away a flash, who would buy a flash? answer - nobody... because everyone would hope to win the flash!

So here's how it's going to work. If you are present at the national, and I have flashed your ECU, you will put your name in a box with all of the people who I flash at the national. From that group I will pull a random name, and that person will have the cost of the flash refunded to them. If I flash 20 at the national, I will pull 2 names. If I flash 30, I will pull 3 names.

The idea here is that only a person who actually wanted the flash will get their flash for free, and those who bought prior to the national aren't "penalized" for not being flashed at the national.

So... do y'all like it?  ;)  Steve

Ya know Mage, it's getting kinda tiring watching you bash someone I know, and personally have as a friend, while you sit back on your (azz) laurels, being a simple douche. I'm risking a severe lashing here from those in power on this forum, but enough is enough, and I'm drawing the line... Stop.... Simply stop, just stop bashing someone who is giving his time, and effort, and has been giving it since I resigned as the Tech Editor.

You have zero creds here, you only thrive to bash. We, as an organization, and a friendly club, do not need this type of behavior.

Is this sinking In?

I refrained from emoticons, as there are none here to relate my personal feelings on this.

Thanks Ted.

that blip on this thread really slowed my roll, I was pretty pumped and enthused for hitting the 100 mark, now I'm getting gun shy to even post at all  :-[

To date, I think the flash conversations here in the c-14 section have been appropriately placed; there's been a lot of folks with questions, and I know this is the first time we collectively can ask questions regarding tuning, flashing, pcv tuning, etc, Lot's of previous misconceptions have been answered, and I think we all better educated about our c-14's as a result. And when I say "we" I really include myself in that, I learn from y'all constantly.

At this point  I think I'm gong to move my future posts about the flash to the "industry Member offerings" section. Maybe there will be less chance of moderation there, and there will hopefully be less feedback  that it was somehow "my fault' that negative posts were generated and that moderation was needed. And in all seriousness, It has been suggested to me that if I don't start threads this kind of thing can't happen, but I think the root of the problem is behind us now.   Steve

:) That root has migrated. We'll see how long it stays alive. Start whatever thread you want, where ever you want and if it's thought provoking and educational it will thrive. I appreciate the information and the availability of another mod for the 14. I still find it perplexing that you have caught so much crap that was never dumped on anyone else that was offering ecu mods.

America and most americans don't want that kind of thoroughness and professionalism in their products anymore. I.E. WALMART!

Steve, congrats on the milestone!  I ride my bike every day and there isn't one that goes by that I don't marvel at how smooth this thing is now!  Before, rarely did she go north of 5k, let alone redline.  Now, I admit it happens more often.

Personal note: Most, if not all, of us realize the knowledge, skill, cost, and time this development required.  None of that is lost on us. Not one bit.  With that said, may I ask that you NOT put future flash posts in a different forum topic?  The reason is that had you done that previously, I never would have read it, and therefore wouldn't have discovered your amazing product.  There is another 'me' out there that is just now buying a C14 and hasn't heard of the flash yet.  Give that person the opportunity to see your threads and decide that this is something they want.

On a related note:  I also agree with the comment from tjhess74 and the location of where posts like this should be kept.  It is very much C14 related and if it were located in another section of the forum, I would not likely have even noticed it.  Hopefully Steve will be able to continue to post and provide updates in the C14 section.

I normally don't barge in on disagreements between members on the Forum.  In this case I feel compelled to.  I've known SISF quite well for several years and know him to be honest and straight forward.  He has spent a lot of time, effort and money developing this product.  And from the great majority of posts his product is well received.

Anyone that feels that this product is snake oil has the right to say so.  They should provide documentation as to why they feel the product is worthless.  They should not, however, make it a personal attack.  Steve, I'm sure, would be happy to discuss his product on a technical basis, but he should not have to respond to personal attacks.

This is not how COG members should treat each other and it's not how this Forum should be used.

Steve,

Congratulations on this milestone of 100 flashes!

Hey, I sincerely hope you're not going to be flashing ECUs the whole time at the national. I want to ride with you, man! I was really bummed that you couldn't make it to last year's national. I really wanted to meet and speak with you in person. I treasure the time you've spent on the phone with me regarding the intricacies of your fuel mapping, the interaction with the oxygen sensors and your surgical precision with the secondaries.

I can't say enough good things about how your hard work and excruciating attention to detail has improved the riding experience of my bike. I know that was your goal from the beginning, and sir, you have overachieved overwhelmingly! Thank you for taking the risk to experiment and tinker, knowing that you could make a good product so much better. Thank you for taking the risk of having a business to make the riding experience so much better for the masses!

I look forward to talking with you in person in Helen!

Hey Guys, I truly appreciate that, BUT things might not be that simple... what if I show up on a beemer barkolounger? my wife is coming to the national, I really want her to enjoy Helen, but she's gonna want the bmw, not the c-14. So I'm in a tough place on this one.  ::) :o   Steve

Oh, and to those who haven't ridden with me and thing it might be a fun adventure... well y'all should speak with those who have ridden with me. I think they would tell you as a rider, I'm a good mechanic  :-[  Steve

Agreed.
Make Mrs. Steve happy.
There's plenty of guys who now have your flash installed,  that you don't NEED yours there to demo.

Most everyone will have decided whether they want your Flash before they get there!  :beerchug:

Been there, and I know that feeling.  ::)  Even though it's insured, you don't want them to loose it because it would be a long painful road back to a running bike.  Good luck!  Mine shipped fine both ways.  The USPS tracking for mail along the route is not accurate.

Anyone who puts Steve down is exactly as Steve describes. I've had conversations with him as a customer over the phone at 7:30pm as he helped me diognose a cam issue. Is YOUR business prepared to give THAT kind of sercice??

Thanks Steve for all your efforts. Now, when's that flash coming for the C-10???

Should have clarified that. No clutch, it was twisting the throttle in first gear.  :motonoises:  :beerchug:

Ok, got my ECU back Monday from Steve..... Am I the only one that sweated bullets plugging that thing back in?   Got it plugged in and buttoned up Monday afternoon. Hit the starter and SUCCESS!

Did a quick 15 mile loop covering neighborhood and highway riding.  This flash transforms the bike, does pull harder in the first 4 gears. Low speed throttle control is MUCH smoother. Before I had my warm idle set to around 1600-1700 to overcome the starting "stumble"  post flash I turned it down to 1300 and it purrs and pulls SMOOTHLY right off idle.

I did get the decal flash and tested it with both smooth roll off and chopping the throttle.  controlled roll off is very smooth, chopping is a little smoother than stock (not much he can do there) but still choppy (go figure right? LOL)  I thought I should clarify, by chopping I mean current throttle input  to 0 throttle as quickly as I could manage.

Gonna have a 200 mile trip on Thursday with a fight H-Town traffic at the end. Will report back on highway and traffic handling then.  I also get to test bars in the stock position, having removed the spacers and pullbacks ( I have a 33 inch inseam and a 36 1/2 inch sleeve, probably only the second generation in my family to walk upright ;)

Short term conclusion? The flash is SO WORTH IT for the connie.

Thanks Steve !
