What do you think?
« on: March 22, 2016, 09:33:53 pm »
I have a 1x3 hole in my cowl underneath the mirror where a tie down strap broke the fairing while she was apart (my bad) and being transported during my 6 month long ordeal when the head failed. I could try an ABS plastic repair at minimal cost, or this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Upper-Front-Fairing-Nose-Cowling-For-Kawasaki-ZG1400-Concours-14-2008-2011-09-10-/111083775807?hash=item19dd1be73f:g:6iAAAOxyB9RSzmdE&vxp=mtr

.....and then have the paint matched

A replacement cowl from Momma Kaw is pricey, about $500, I figure the above would be about half that. Weren't the mirrors raised from the 2010's on, did the cowl remain the same? My C14 is a 2009 in, I believe, what Mama Kaw calls Candy Diamond Red.
I guess I could just have the paint shop repair my cowl then repaint it....how much should I expect this all the cost?

Thoughts?

You could do either in my opinion, but fixing it wouldn't be that difficult.  I would use a fiberglass or a plastic repair kit.  They are inexpensive, and fairly easy to use.  Just take your time, and wet-sand it til you are happy with the results.  I don't know anything about the fairing replacement you show on ebay, whether it is a cheaper plastic, or whatever.  If it is a thinner plastic, you would be better off repairing what you have.   :beerchug:

Hi,
I'd look for a used OEM part! :great:

E-Bay, Part Houses, Motorcycle Junkyards ect.! ;D

:)The problem is when you paint a panel it will not match the rest of the panels no matter how many times you try . I have been there.
This is why the suggestion to find an OEM part is a good one.
If you only have a 1x3 hole then find a 2x4 sticker to cover it. :) :)

Check that post that just bought ZG's bike. He's selling 2 sets of the full plastics. I'll look for a link.

For the paint go to Colorite.  http://www.colorrite.com/  They can provide the correct color for bikes made way back when.  They provide the primer, paint, top coat,  clearcoat, and sandpaper, tack cloth, everything you need except the elbow grease.  Comes in touch up, or spray cans, or bulk.

I scratched up the lower fairing on my '12.  The color match is almost perfect, just not quite as sparkly as the factory paint.

Good luck.
