16ah series battery. Will it fit a C-14
« on: April 17, 2019, 07:17:11 pm »
Was looking at Yuasa batteries and came across a 16ah series.
I seem to recall that someone discovered them previously and used one?

They are the same dimensionally, unsure of weight, but higher Ah and CCA.
Battery post locations are correct.
Are shown to fit our bikes.

Are they a equal or better replacement battery?
If yes, why wouldn't Kawasaki have used them originally?

NOTE: I posted this listing as it included dimensions. It is priced at $102.
Other listings had them priced for as little as $89.

Note the two tabs between the posts. They are closer together than the stock battery.

While the overall dimensions are right, some creative dremel use may be required on the plastic cover that goes on top of the battery.

When I was researching my current Yuasa battery information, both the GYZ16H and YTX14H-BS will work in our C14s according to Yuasa's form search. Go with what you trust and low price.

Link here from Yuasa's site => https://www.yuasabatteries.com/batteries/search-results/?vehicle_type=motorcycle&vehicle_make=kawasaki&vehicle_year=2008&vehicle_model=zg1400-concours-abs

seams to be a viable candidate... price considered. and is noted as fit for application...
I'd do one...

I wish Odyssey made one in the correct "package", I'm sure they would be able to give ya 20ah, in that space, and a long term warranty...

I think they re thought the "missing link" in the market place, when they discontinued the one that was OEM, and now you see the outcome... great on all fronts tho now.. but It is a Yuasa.. so... JUMP on it bro...
heck, grab the lowest price unit you can find.. this one is like $5 more than the puny Excide i bought last year...

as for the comment about the case, and modifying it... I don't get that part, it will fit perfectly just like the OEM... I guess some folks never looked at the battery in the bike.... :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

It will fit in the compartment without a doubt. I was referring to the plastic holder that clips around the battery before sliding it into the compartment. The top half that kind-of guides the negative cable would bump into the narrower tabs on the battery. You would have to dremel that top plastic part,  part #14092 on the attached image.

I suggest you actually remove your battery, and examine just how it fits in, with the cables, and the shroud.

please.

please.

 :-X :-[ :-[

First pic is the battery in the 2016 C14 shroud. Note the form fitting top part.

The second pic is a comparison of the battery and shroud side by side. There is no room for the narrower tabs on the GYZ16H battery.

Also, quotes from C14 owners in Revzilla reviews for the GYZ16H:

Fits a 2011 Kaw C14 (with some work)
"When installing the battery, I came to find that the top of the battery box would not fit. Luckily for me I had a dremel tool with a grinding wheel and had to cut out a section to clear the ribs on the top of the battery. Did it work? Yes. Should I have had to do this? NO!"

Does not Kawasaki 2012 C14 battery box
"Kawasaki uses a weird battery box (instead of a simple strap) and the Yuasa is not shaped exactly like the stock battery. No amount of cussing helped but it's impossible to clip both sides of the battery box top."

Hope that helps clear up what I was trying to impart.

Ted,

Since Kawasaki specs out for production costs...and uses...Furukawa batteries...that could be the reason they didn't use the Yuasa.  Furukawa, while being owned by Yuasa, doesn't necessarily produce the same size and power battery as others.  I can't find when the GYZ battery began production, but, it could not have been available yet...so, Kawasaki didn't cost-spec it for production purposes in a bike as old as the Concours 1400 is.  Manufacturers sign contracts with companies that supply products...it makes sense that they wouldn't pick a battery from another source.

The battery you mention is an aftermarket substitute...and...it works for your bike...it's just not the OEM...which could have been for any number of reasons...

HTH...

OK, I get what you are saying now.... my mistake...
that shroud changed in 2010, and is carried thru to current production....

Not really a big deal tho, the '08-'10 "cover" is still available, and does not have that "depression" you show....
I questioned this as I have my batt on the bench, and shroud...2008 model....
and that shroud will fit the "new" battery with no issue...
anyway, for reference:

2008
14091-0533  COVER,BATTERY,UPP
$23 from Ron Ayers....

26012-1409  BATTERY,FTZ14-BS,12V 14AH

2011
14092-0034  COVER,BATTERY,UPP
26012-1409  BATTERY,FTZ14-BS,12V 14AH

2018
26012-0595  BATTERY,FTZ14-BS,12V 14AH

no idea why they changed that shroud, but as I have noted in the past, that was the point in time where they were having issues with the OEM Furokawa batteries, not having a good seal around the terminals, and "gassing" out thru them, causing corrosion...
as seen below...

or maybe it was to "prevent/make more difficult" routing the cables improperly (I've seen a couple '08-'09's with the neg cable running across the front, right over the positive one) and thru that "tunnel" they provide for it.

contacted Revzilla, and posted a "review" stating the need for the different shroud, and also did a "chat" with customer service about the same thing... and told them to "revise" the application list...  :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Not that I would pay the price they ask, or trust them to send me a battery that wasn't dropped on the ground, kicked, booted, and tumbled at that...  but just did it to keep people from paying big $ and getting shafted.

I deal with other battery companies, like Battery Mart, and they always deliver goods well protected, and almost overnight.. for great prices.. no complaints on them from me.

I checked on the Forum as I thought I had seen this before.
Turned out that I was right.
I was in the first discussion asking the same question in 2017 after TicTac installed one of these.

My bike occasionally sounds like it's cranking slow. Has been doing this for some time.
ie: Was doing it when I had the first discussion in 2017.  :truce:
  {Yes, I have gone back and checked the connections}

Was going to order a battery, but I decided to check the battery first. {Its 12.47 volts after setting a week}..
Will check again in a few days...
  {Yes, I know what's "probably" going to happen if I don't order the battery}

I have both of my Exides on the bench, slipped up and fell asleep and let the one I pulled outta the bike, that had like 4v on it, and it sat overnight @ a 2 Amp, manual charge... its fine now, was worried, it's sitting @13.2V, and the other one is sitting at 13.4V, after sitting.. so both are good...

I kinda freaked out when I realized I was "cooking" the newest batt (the other one was 2 years old, but when it didn't respond last year in preliminary "charge" attempts, I bought the new one... ) go figure, but I have 2 perfect batt's, and no excuses... if you want that new batt, buy it, and find an '08-'09 batt shroud, ebay, etc.... all is good.

I've had that battery in my bike (2012) for about 3 years I think. The top plastic battery cover needs to be modified so it will snap into place on the bottom. I used dremel tool & xacto knife. Trial  & error for till it fits... Battery works great.

FYI, this is the one that I bought and it's a perfect fit. Not only that but because it has two positive and two negative terminals it makes connecting extra stuff so much easier.

Conrad, you posted a MotoBatt MBTX12U ? Our bikes use a 14 series Yuasa battery...
I believe what your saying about fit.
So, I'm assuming the dimensions that are posted in the add are wrong.
With their dimensions, it has no chance of fitting into our bikes.
  Stock; 6 x 3.4 x 5.75    Theirs; 5.9 x 10.5 x 5.1 inches
(ie; They show it to be 10 1/2" wide)  (also don't show cranking amps)  :-[
NOTE: My 2014 Battery cover might have to be replaced by an older style battery Cover to make it work on my bike?
{Cover info is posted earlier in this discussion by MOB}.

I like the Motobatt design (4 posts/more cranking amps than others)
So, I looked it up in the 14 & 16 series version.

They don't offer a 14 series, so you are correct in your selection.

The Motobatt 16 series looked to be a better fit but they show it to be 5/8" taller than ours or the 16 series Yuasa.
(So, it wouldn't fit in the bike)   Arghhh

PS: (1 week since previous measurement) My battery is now showing 12.40 volts.

Based on Ted's info, the Yuasa 16Ah AGM Battery computes to a lower $5.62/Ah and a higher CCA. I'd get the Yuasa for my dollars.

NOTE: My 2014 Battery cover would have to be replaced by an older style battery Cover to make it work on my bike.

Ride safe, Ted

PS: (1 week since previous measurement) My battery is now showing 12.40 volts.

Sorry, I never noticed that number for the width of the Motobatt. As you're already guessed, that number is incorrect. As I said, it's a prefect fit in my bike and the four terminals make connecting accessories easier. I've been using this battery since 11/2015 without any issues.

Thanks Conrad.
Seeing that Harry agreed with me, I became very concerned:-\
but I liked his reasoning  :-[ and set out to see if I could find other batteries for less $$.
My target was to find CCA greater than 200 with a lower cost...  >:D

Does anybody have a solution??  <grin>  :104:

#1 If I keep 200 ah, lower cost is EZ to find by buying other than Yuasa/Motobatt.  :great:
#2 Yuasa/others make a High performance version (greater CCA) of the stock YTX14-BS battery, but it won't fit our bikes.  :-[
#3 Other battery manufacturers make a 16 series battery {similar to the Yuasa GYZ16H} but all are too tall to fit in our bikes.  :-[
        {The only 16 series I've found, that fits in our bikes,, is the Yuasa GYZ16H}
#4 I came across Lithium batteries. Used in snow-mobile's. Huge CCA, but low ah(?). Extremely light/small.  High $$!
I am not considering one but (for the guys that like lighter) would they work?

I think that would be worth the hunt. Lighter is a good thing. CCA trumps Ah in my opinion.

We mostly use our batteries to start the fun. The alternator does the rest unless you are loading down the system with too many electric farkles.
If snow mobilers are using Lithium batteries I see no reason why we cannot. They use electrics just as much as we do to operate heaters and radios too.
They want to be lite so they can glide over soft snow.

We want to be lite so when we drop our bikes, we can get them back up. Helps MPG too for them spirited rides in the twisties.

I think Ted is on to something here if he can stay focused and lay off the paste.

Ted,

My battery says 14.7 Ah (20HR), 230 CCA, I would be looking for the smallest Lithium batt that would match or exceed 230 CCA at 12 volts.  :great:

What battery do you have? Sounds ideal if lower cost?
NOTE: I'm not sure that loosing 8-10 lbs is worth an extra $100? {ie; I'm a frugal Cogger}
Was trying to use your $$ per Ah {or CCA} calcualtion,   and CCA above 200...

Ride safe, Ted

PS: Liked the 330 CCA, but {living in Houston} I seldom have to crank the bike in a snow storm..  :nananana:
