2008 Saddle Bag repair/replacement
« on: November 20, 2018, 08:32:17 pm »
I damaged the latching mechanism on the left bag on my silver 2008.  I can't find that lock/latch to repair it, so I'm wondering if someone might have a used bag I could purchase and just replace it.  Suggestions?   :??:

Ebay has some indifferent years for sale. Key lock (the tumbler) can be taken out and the Bag cover  is bolted on. No matter what you do it going to cost but still cheaper than buying a bag from Kawasaki.

I've seen several of these broken.
What does the broken part look like? Would it be a complicated part to make?
Thinking maybe it would be possible for some savvy machinist to start making them to sell?

NOTE: I am not that person. Just thinking out loud.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions!  I did find a replacement bag on Ebay for $400.  Not Kawasaki but cheaper.  Just trying to see what, if any, other options are out there.  Gonna keep lookin!  In the meantime, Y'all have a Happy Thanksgiving!   :beerchug:

look at the back of the bag, and particularly the actual plastic latching hook...
if it's RED, you get one free from Kaw, as it was a recall free replacement...
no mater who owns the bike, or how many times it's been sold...

if its ORANGE, it's a replaced one already,
but many '08-'09's are still out there needing the replacement..

also, the actual failure parts are the internal links inside the enclosed latch assembly, so 3D printing of some plastic part ain't the solution, the failed parts ain't the visible external Hook, they just made that part a different color so it could be easily/visibly seen as the replacement assembled unit.

but you don't need a whole bag, just the bag lock/latch assembly, which comes with keys and tumbler....

that would be a new style latch, 2010 model, with the orange colored plastic latching hook

Thank you for the information.  I don't think I was clear on what I need.  It's the Orange tong/latch that broke.  It's made of plastic or ceramic?  Everything else is metal.  So, I'm not sure that is replaceable without buying the whole tamale.  Might find a used one, keep looking....

those are pretty tough, fiberglass reinforced plastic (polycarbonate iirc), so far I haven't seen one fracture... bummer. did it break/crack where the "pin" goes thru it?
everything else inside is all metal pins and links, and the pins are 'mushroomed' on the ends to retain them. It wouldn't hurt to take the bag, or the latch mechanism in and show it to a dealer, and maybe they would shoot a picture of the breakage, and forward it to Kaw.... that's pretty much how the first generation of latches got resolved...  they may even have an "old style" latch there, you could scab in for careful use while you search around, altho they were supposed to either return them to Kaw, or destroy them by smashing and disposing. Can't hurt to ask tho,
you can read about the mechanism in the attachment below.
best of luck.

As Kawasaki has been replacing the red with orange. because of that,  wondering if maybe the orange ones are available?
I'll assume they prefer to sell the whole assembly, but thought it worth asking as they obviously make them.

Ted you got that backwards, the red ones are being replaced, the orange one is the upgraded.
I broke an orange one as well but it broke in an accident so Kawasaki was not to blame and I was lucky to find a replacement bag from a fellow COG.
