2009 C14 Clutch issue
« on: March 07, 2018, 12:10:26 pm »
Howdy All,
Recently I had a clutch issues on my '09 ABS with 44k miles. Had not previously serviced the clutch in the past (may have been my issue in the first place). One morning running just fine doing my daily run to work, next morning the clutch lever had no resistance...could not disengage the clutch. Did not see any significant fluid loss or leakages. Finally had a weekend to diagnose. Based on the great folks here on the forum, I pre-purchased a slave cylinder. That's where I started. When I pulled the cylinder I had significant corrosion behind the assembly in the housing. Looks like the seal failed in the slave cylinder and it prevented the piston from moving (wish I had the head on to take pics). I cleaned it out with wire brush, replaced the cylinder and bleed the system the "old fashioned way." Works like a dream now and the C14 is back on the road..maybe now I need to return the Vette I bought while I was suffering withdrawals.

Lesson learned, check gear regularly and conduct your preventative care. The job itself was easy, but the cost was a $110 self service bill, plus my labor, and a new car...but I a man back on the bike!! As Steev says "KIPASS!"

Did you regularly change your clutch fluid?

I'm wondering if water in the fluid contributed to the corrosion?

You might have noticed that the clutch fluid gets nasty looking FAR sooner than the brake fluid.  This is because it "works" a lot more often.  You probably clutch at least 10X more often than you brake.  So flushing the clutch fluid is important to keep things clean and happy.

Agree with all you young lads. My lesson learned was that the raw power of the Connie overcame any need for simple preventative maintenance..

Thank you for your advice. Regular servicing is critical in maintaining the proper function of this amazing ride.

Ride on gents. Hopefully we'll see you riding the triple sisters soon.

Cheers, Mike
