A Kaw snuck into the Hawg pen...
« on: January 02, 2018, 12:52:34 pm »
Took a nice Jan. 1 ride to the local Polar Plunge in town. Snuck in and rode sweep behind about 30 HD's, a lot of them trikes, and a CanAM. Then rode to Papa Murphys and filled my Pizza Carrier and went home. It was about 28 f.

It's always nice to remind those smoke and noise producing beasts what a really comfortable and fast bike looks and sounds like :))

In winter I more or less ride every day in temperatures of 33-37 in the morning. My only criteria is that it not be frozen with ice on the pavement. I'll ride if it is frozen but hasn't rained in a week and the roads are dry. Very conservatively, but I'll ride. If us here in the PNW didn't ride when it was 33-37 in the morning we wouldn't ride for 4 months of the year, and that would suck!!

For that matter, I wonder if there are any riders who are more experienced with riding in wet and cold conditions than us here in the Seattle area. I mean, other places are way colder, but they can't ride in winter. We ride 360 days a year, and for 200+ of those it is 35-50 and wet.
We sit together, the mountain and me, until only the mountain remains.

Yeah, but there is a 'Starbunks' every 200 feet so you can get warm overpriced coffee along the way :))

I lived on the 'Wetside' of WA state for 2 years and a motorcycle was my only transport...I was young...I look back and still wonder how I survived a few of those cold deluges, but I did.

Rode my '76 RD-400 over Snoqualmie Pass to Yakima from Kirkland one February day. 6 inches of slushy snow about 2 miles each side of the summit and temps below freezing once over the hump.
Have never been so cold...could not see my breath as it was almost the same temp as the air, it seemed. Sat in a 102 degree hot tub for 2 hours with teeth chattering before i finally thawed out.

Fun memories now, but one does not get an award for that stuff other than living to tell about it.

Cool! I too had a '76 RD-400. It was all I had for over a year and I rode it with snow on the ground also. Fond memories...
