Bought used and its turned all chain smoker on me
« on: June 25, 2019, 06:37:29 pm »
So excuse my ignorance if somebody else has posted with a similar issue but I am new to the forums and the information I have read here has been loads more helpful in general then google searching and asking fellow friends that ride.

I bought a 2008 Concours 14 back in April with 42k miles on it. Rode like a dream at the dealer, I have put about 5k commuting and fun time miles on it since. Down to the problem is I started it last weekend and went to grab my helmet out of my jeep roughly 10 or so feet away and came back to the bike looking like it was chain vaping out of the triple tree. I would normally call the dealer and ask what the hell but I was alil too excited by a good deal at the Harley dealer and they offered no warranty since it was both 11 years old and used. I am thinking I may be just a head gasket? but Im curious as coworkers who are more mechanically experienced then me say it could be the cam position sensor as well. I wouldn't complain if I needed to rebuild just dont wanna put all my eggs in and it be something super simple.

Could be the valve cover gasket but likely it is the exhaust cam position sensor oring....it is a known leak point and drips onto the headers.

cam sensor o-ring, exhaust side, drips onto header... annoying, but not a big deal, and it's only a drop or so, and burns off.. replacement O-ring available at Murph's kits.. don't bother getting one from a dealership, they aren't tight fitting, the MOB ring, is slightly larger/tighter, and does not leak...
2 for $6, and should only take a day or 2 to get to you...

in the meantime, don't freak out, and ride on...

^^^^ Absolutely, but I'm glad Murph has them now. I'm still a little miffed at how much MOB was charging!  :pokestick:  :))

and welcome barricade! FWIW I would bet on the o'ring....

Good call.   My first thought as well.....now replaced mine TWICE.

One of the few weak points on this bike, and SOoooooo minor.

Still wondering why i couldn't get the MOB ring to fit mine???  :-[
