Decided to put them away for the season. :-(
« on: November 10, 2013, 12:22:44 am »
It has been a great year of riding.....14k or so miles.  Typically I will try to ride as long as the roads stay dry and fairly clear of sand and salt.  Unfortunately we had a 6+ inch snow come through and even though it warmed up and melted over the next few days the city found it necessary to coat the roads with salt and sand.  My son and I decided it was best to add stabilizer, top off the tanks, wipe them down one last time and tuck them away in the second garage.

Already looking forward to next season. :-)

Are you going to put them on battery tenders?  Fortunately here we have some decent riding days during the winter and the odd day or two of snow.

Hi Kevin.  Glad you still have some riding weather left in your part of the country.  In the upper Midwest and after the time change it is always a gift if we get to ride much into November.  The previous  two seasons we have had very warm fall temps and low precip.  Last year I commuted into December and even though there were mornings where temps were in the teens, the roads were clear.  This year with the recent snow the roads are already a mess....so thought it best to tuck them away now.  We'll probably pull the FZ1 and C14 out at some point in February and move them up to the main garage/shop for maintenance and farkling. :-)

Thanks for the question on the tender.  We usually pull the batteries and rotate a trickle charger around once a month to keep them happy.

Take care and enjoy the continued nice weather.

Love the GPz900.  Would love to add one to my stable.  Don't have the room and my wife would kill me.

I am in Ohio and ride all year. If it's dry I will ride. I can also park it in my shop if the weather changes prior to going home for the day.

Thanks Connieman.  The GPZ (Grandpa Z) has been a labor of love and a great project for my son and I.  It was a CL find and it had sat in storage for about 7 years when we bought it.  We went through it stem-stern.  We rode it on/off this past season but were never happy with the top-end pull.  Just sorted the jetting out and it runs amazing.  Our plan was to sell it and move on to something else but it is nice having around too.  Let me know if you are interested and would like to see it....

I support year round ridding ConcoursKZ....maybe I have just gotten a little soft.  Woke up to another inch of snow today, a strong north wind and more S&S on the roads.....I think we made the right call and putting them away when we did.  Spring will be here soon, right?

Hey Soda,

Your out in Brandon if I remember correctly right?  I'm over on the west side of Sioux Falls, but my mother lives in Brandon.  I had to take my Connie over to her garage a couple weeks back, I wish I could say it was for the same reason, but the lovely lady wants the garage back so she don't have to scrape.  Joys of apartment living with one garage.  Lets get a ride in next year sometime.  :motonoises:

Hey Andrew.  You are so right....I am in Brandon.  Stop by if you are in the area.

Steve, great story....at least you should have been heading for warmer climates as you traveled towards home.

Years ago my girlfriend (now wife) and I were going to visit her folks one weekend in mid April.  The forecast made it sound like it would be a great opportunity for a first long ride of the year so we (I more so) decided to take the CB1100F I had at the time.  Pack up the soft saddle bags, tied a duffel on the short rack and headed north after work on Friday (mid evening).  About 2 hours in I could see lightening to the north and west of us.  I had one rain suit and decided to put the hammer down a bit to try and find a place to hang out before the rain moved in.  Warned my girlfriend and opened up the Honda.....pulled into a Country Kitchen restaurant just as it started to rain.  Pulled off our helmets to thunder booms, lightning flashes and wind swirling around so I pulled up on the sidewalk under the canopy.  Just as we walked in the door it started hailing....big chunks!  We had about 5 cups of hot chocolate and then went back outside to find the temp had dropped about 30 degrees.  Thankfully we were only about an hour from her folks and arrived cold but with a fun story to share.  I kept thinking at least it would be nice for the ride home....however, while we were there the temps dropped even more and the morning we needed to leave we woke up to mid-twenties and snow.  My now mother-in-law bundled up my wife in every piece of insulated clothing she had.....I did not get anything (nor deserved it).  It was a bitter ride home (for me) but we made it safely.

Despite my poor travel judgement my father-in-law still agreed to let me marry his daughter when I asked later that year.  I still get ribbed about it every so often. :-)
