Title: Emergency Fob C14
Post by: Doc on November 04, 2017, 12:51:34 pm
Stupid question - does the backup fob have a battery?

No. Passive RFID only. The bike queries the fob, fob says "I'm here, you can crank."

You're welcome. Just remember to hold it like the book shows (you can download an owner's manual if you need  it). It's REALLY short range.

I keep my passive fob hidden under the seat.  That way, it's always available with the bike if my active fob is lost.  Because the range is short for the passive fob, it won't allow the bike to be started unless you pull it out and place it next to the main switch.

Where do you hide the key to get the seat off?

I've got a generic key for the panniers, tank, and seat along with a Givi key on a retractable lanyard that clips in my jacket pocket.

Just to point out. The 08-09 came with two fobs. IIRC, 2010 is when they started only giving you one fob and one RFID chipped back up card which I believe this is the discussion here. I also kept my fob wrapped in aluminum foil and in a plastic bag under the seat (also had multiple keys for panniers and seat access) Not saying the card could be read from that distance. But why take the chance?
