Final Drive Leaking
« on: January 04, 2020, 02:22:39 pm »
The final drive on my 2011 C-14 with 150K miles is leaking. I removed it from the bike. The rubber boot in front of the unit had lots of oil in it. So I'm sure an oil seal needs replacement.
I have done all the maintenance on the bike myself to this point. But looking at the service manual on the final drive I'm a little concerned that trying to work on this unit takes some special tools and knowledge. So I'm considering taking the final drive unit to a Kawa dealer a couple hours away.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

I think when we replaced the final drive on my son's C14, the one off of ebay was 40 or 50 bucks.  The original was working ok, but was scuffed from the drop.

I'm just about ready to order one from ebay. But it looks like most of what I see are from ZGs.I am assuming a ZG is identical to a Concours? Would a final drive from a 2008 or 2013 ZG fit on my 2011 C-14?
Again, Thanks

Same bike ZG1400 and C14 and GTR1400 as far as 95% of bike.  GTR1400 is European/market ZG for the rest.

One of Fred Harmons videos has a really good step by step on how to remove and service the seals and splines on the shaft.  I think he did it all without using special tools.

Dave, I have a set of videos, maybe 6 discs, covering various subjects from changing the head lite bulb to setting the valves. I guess it's the Fred Harmon set. I looked and did not see anything dealing with the final drive. Maybe I missed it or we are talking about different video sets.
I ordered a final drive from eBay yesterday so in a few days it should be here.
Thanks for the input.

Hi Woodie,

The section about removing the removing the final drive shaft is on the last disc, it's the disc titled "Update".  It's the very last (Section 8) titled "Drive Spline Lube".  It covers the complete removal and replacement of the driveshaft.

I finally got around to watching the last Fred Harmon video that included the section on lubing driveshaft  splines. Informative but not what I was after. My final drive is leaking gear oil from the oil seals at the front of the unit. I purchased a used final drive unit off of eBay. I have yet to install it but it looks very good. Thanks
